I've searched the forum, and haven't come up with anything.

Does anyone know if there is a restaurant in Chicagoland that serves a Luther burger? For those that aren't in the know, it is an artery clogging monstrosity consisting of a nice big burger, bacon, cheese, onions, and Krispy Kreme donuts instead of buns.

I've always wanted to try one. I know I can make one myself, but I would prefer to get one from an establishment that has perfected the creation.

While it seems unlikely that I would ever eat this, I am very curious as to the history of the dish.

    Hi,

I bumped into Gus who owns Wiener and Still Champion in Evanston. He is also an LTH guy who posts as GP60004. We were talking about your quest for the Luther Burger, which he knew the backstory. I have a hunch if you bring a krispy kream donut, then Gus will make the fillings.

Heck, put it on the Events board or send me a PM, maybe we can rendezvous there just to try this Luther thing at least once.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

It's a shame Luther Vandross wasn't a metal singer (could you even imagine?), or I'm sure it could show up as a special at Kuma's.

This is a remarkably unattractive dish and yet...I would eat it, of course.

Is it my imagination/bad vision, or is the Krispy Kreme split and arranged so that what used to be the outside part is now actually inside (i.e., is the cut-side out)? Or is it just that the top slice (in both separate shots) is placed cut-side out?

    Hammond,

Snopes has a pretty good picture of the Luther Burger, seems two Krispy Kreme donuts are used as one bun.

I find the concept unappealing, but would try one, once, just for the hell of it.

    Enjoy,

    Hi,

Gus was of the opinion a Krispy Kreme was cut in half with the sticky side facing the burger. You could then eat it without your fingers feeling sticky the whole time.

I really think meeting up at Wiener and Still Champion with a box of Krispy Kreme's would be a fun lunch. Certainly one to more strike through on the list of odd foods to eat before you die. :)

That sounds like a reasonable rationale, though I must say, such dainty concerns seem somewhat out of sync with this aggressively gloppy creation, which appears to be a big boisterous belch in the face of good taste (I don't mean propriety; I mean what happens on the tongue).

On the way back from dinner tonight, we were discussing the LB and The Baconator (Wendy's), and The Wife wondered aloud why it is, in this time of increased sensitivity to excessive fats, cholesterol, red meat intake, etc., that such things come to exist. It's almost as though they are mocking declarations of immunity to such healthy concerns, defiant over-indulgences standing arms akimbo and shouting belligerently at the looming Nanny State, "I eat what I please, even if it's bad for me, even if it doesn't taste that good, because I can, dammit, and I will!"

Still, it is very cool of Gus to consent to make these.

Check out Youtube animated piece on making LB's (using what appears to be Sizzlean and George Foreman Grill, probably for reasons of heart health  )

    Gus,

Standard glazed Krispy Kreme seems a bit fragile to support bacon, burger and egg if cut in half, but the Luther is implausible to begin with.

Either, or both, ways please count me in for the low cal LB festivities.

As much as I find this to be an abomination in the eyes of the burger gods, I would be interested in checking out the Luther Burger. Maybe someone could even talk Gus into making a hamdog as well.

    LTH,

Ok, I think I've figured this out. Krispy Kreme glazed donuts are glazed on one side only. The Luther Burger uses two donuts glazed side in (toward the meat) with the non glazed side facing outward.

Speaking of Wiener and Still Champion, they are a featured participant in this Saturdays National Corn Dog celebrations.

    Enjoy,
Gary (who is giving way too much thought to the construction of the Luther Burger)

You said one donut is split, I say use two donuts with the glazed side facing in. Only the top part of a Krispy Kreme glazed dount is glazed.

    Gary,

THis is what i got off the interweb:

"Some versions of the Luther Burger are made with two donuts, at other times a single donut is cut in half and grilled after the meat has been cooked separately; the donut halves are placed around the meat glazed-side-in and the whole sandwich is flattened on the grill and cooked briefly to allow for somewhat less messy consumption. They often include cheese and/or bacon, but normally no vegetables or condiments."

so it looks like it can be done both ways but no mention of the fried egg. I'm planning on using a smaller patty so cutting it in half should work.

Gus, will egg be an option? I feel like this element adds just the right bit of over-the-top X infinity that I'm looking for in this meal. I can bring the eggs -- Wettstein's, of course, so no antibiotics or anything unhealthy in them. I've also got some of MAG's most excellent red pepper catsup, which I will also bring (because there's no such thing as too much, right?).

I don't think the airy texture of the Krispy Kreme will hold up to the burger if they are cut in half. I say, full donuts ahead!

Yes...fried egg is an option. I have hormone free eggs so there is no need to bring any along.

Bring the catsup..it can join the curry catsup and chipotle catsup that we have

Behold the Terrible Glory of The Luther Burger
    Image
    Image

I was very happy to have had the chance to photograph this monstrosity but I'm not so sure how happy I was to have had the opportunity to eat one. Actually, I split one 4 ways and that was more than enough for me but I think a couple people enjoyed the Luther Burger enough to order another one. When I left Winner and Still Champion, no one had yet eaten one with an egg on it.

BTW, as posted above, today is National Corn Dog Day and WASC is selling their fabulous dipped-to-order Dippin' Dogs for only $1 each.
