Wait! There absolutely, positively IS such a restaurant in the U.S., G-d help us. It's uWink, in L.A., the latest brainchild of Nolan Bushnell, he of Atari and Chuck E. Cheese fame, at the Hollywood and Highland epicenter of good eating :-)

Drivel from their web site: At the center of uWink is our food. It’s fresh and made just for you. It's ordered at the table on touch screen terminals, served quickly and accurately by runners. No waiting for a waitperson, no misunderstandings in the kitchen. No flagging down your server to get more water. Our signature bistro fare includes pizza, burgers, salads, appetizers and shareable desserts. Tasty and fresh always!

No, I haven't been there. Happy to hear from anyone who's taken one for the team.

Although my first reaction (the same as everybody's) is that this is a harbinger of some horrible Brave New World, the more I think about it the more I think that it (so long as the food coming out of the kitchen is good) could be OK.

I guess the truth is that it is inferior to being served by a useful, well-informed, friendly, competent human, but superior to being served by a useless, ill-informed, hostile, incompetent human.

I dunno. It seems like there's lots of room for incompetent humans there. The kitchen can still get your order wrong. The runner can still bring you the wrong dish. Whoever's responsible for responding to the mechanized request for more water can still ignore you.

Why not just bring back the Automat?

    Hi,

I just looked at the original post and link. It has expired, though in spirit it will continue to live on here!

NYC did. In the East Village. It's called Bamn!. I was there last month out of curiosity, but it's not a place I'd go out of my way for if I worked, say, in Midtown.
