What the heck does Baladoche mean?

After a search I came up with this.

"Bala", in Buddhism refers to the spiritual powers possessed by a Buddha.

"Doche" used to signify the orgasmic awesomeness of any person, place or thing.

    So maybe spiritual orgasm?

It's a made up word that is supposed to mean tasty and sweet.

    EFG,

    An excellent analysis.

Let me add, however, that some scholars believe this name to be of Arabic origin, a compound formed from the words balad 'village' and shi 'thing', thus, the 'village thing'. A variant of this analysis asserts that it is built from the Arabic roots bâl 'urine' and daukha 'giddiness'. I remain sceptical with regards to any and all attempts to derive the name from an Asiatic tongue.

My own analysis leads me to believe that there are two possibilities:
    1) it is from the Walloon bal 'bale' and d'ohê 'of bones'.
    2) it is a word brought to earth by the extraterrestials who invented waffles.

I commented on another aspect of the curious onomastic element to this establishment's marketing strategy on a previous page of this thread:

Antonius wrote:I suppose the name of this place is part of the "concept" and perhaps then reflects marketing strategy rather than sheer ignorance but it should be noted that a) "Zücker" is a possible family name but has nothing to do with 'sugar' -- German for sugar is «Zucker», no umlaut; b) calling these waffels "Zückerwaffeln" or "Zücker waffles" makes about as much sense as opening an Italian restaurant in Chicago that features Roman style semolina gnocchi but refers to them only as Grießknödel. The term 'Zuckerwaffel' (ohne Umlaut) exists but to my knowledge only as a German rendering by translation of the Dutch suikerwafel. And yet, this particular style of waffle is associated with Liège, itself a city where French is the primary language (the native Walloon as well as the Italian, Arabic, etc. of immigrant groups are also well represented). In French, these are gauf' au suc' (gaufres au sucre). Given that the place says it makes Belgian waffles and that the two official languages of Belgium are Dutch and French* and further that the style of waffles made here is the one associated with Liège, where French is the official language, one must assume that part of the marketing concept involved just getting umlaut dots in the name somehow, anyhow...

    There's always the chance that it's just a simple typo -- missing a "u".

Eh, I kinda like this place. Not the price (which is ridiculous) but the waffles are tasty when freshly-made.

I saw what appears to be a new outpost of Baladoché being prepared for opening (possibly already open) on Devon just West of intersection with Sheridan/Broadway.

It looks like someone posted a review on Yelp yesterday, so I guess it's open?

    Evenings only, apparently.

Two other comments: 1) They (at least the Clark St. location) take Euros (this ends up being cheaper than $); 2) They've finally figured out that they can reheat previously-made waffles in the iron to bring them back to life, instead of just serving them cold....

I just wish they'd quit harassing me every time I walk by their window. If I wanted a sucker waffle, or whatever its called, I would come in and get one without their employees giving me the third degree from their street level window everyday. Honestly, I won't even by coffee anymore from them because they annoy me so much as I pass by.

A friend of mine had a similarly unpleasant experience. Went in for something very specific--I don't recall what, but it was simple and clear, like a coffee--and the staff person said, "no, you have to have X" (whatever they were pushing that was fancier and pricier than what she actually wanted, and instead of simpy accepting her demurral, simply would not let up and wouldn't give her what she came in for. She said she simply will not go back, it was that unbearable. Somehow I'm always walking on the opposite side of the street, so I've never gotten really within range, but they have often harrassed me from all the way across the street. They're like aggressive panhandlers with a storefront. I just want to get away. Do they think it's cute and charming? Dunno. Dunncare.

With their aggressive selling, this place always makes me think of challenges on The Apprentice ("whichever team sells the most waffles will win a fabulous night talking to my hair piece").

Fortunately for them, they don't need to employ aggressive tactics with me. I am absolutely addicted to those waffles and I'm glad they're only $5 because I'm certain I would pay more.

What form does the harassment take for you guys? In my experience it seems to be limited to offering a free waffle sample, which, while admittedly traumatizing, is not quite up to the horrors of the comfy chair.

Its not so much the initial offering of the waffle sample that bugs me. It is the dogged insistence that I try it even after I have politely declined the initial offer. These days, I cross the street half a block earlier simply to avoid them.

That does sound obnoxious. For what it's worth, I've only had very courteous and low-key service there, but I've only been a handful of times.
