simply put, Gigio's is a dump. I haven't disclosed the stores location or whereabouts to my wife, even though we have driven past it several times. I know if she saw it, that would be the end of Gigio's.

it should be no surprise, that the delivery from Gigio's, while a much more plesant option, is still interesting to say the least. the last time we got delivery, I think the car that brought it had no headlights, no taillights (it was night) and only had three tires it was in such bad shape. the delivery person reminded me of Robin Williams in The Fisher King.

such is life in uptown, and I take it as a part of the experience of gigios.

Sort of scary, but after reading this, this is the next pizza we will be having delivered.

I did read a few other reviews though.

For the past 15 years, I have been in an on-again off-again relationship with Calo's pizza. Right now, we are definitely on-again. The last few thin crust pizzas (which are of the Chicago-style crispy crust variety) I have ordered from there have been excellent, and the delivery was really fast. Hopefully we will last this time, but I am beginning to fear that (with pizza at least) there can be no happily ever after.

I also echo the recommendation for Apart, despite their confusing menu and lame marketing materials. I usually ignore the Italianish named "signature" combinations, and just order ala carte toppings like I would from any other pizza joint. They don't seem to have a problem with that. I find Apart's pizza is a pretty good rendition of the east coast style. I don't think it is "cracker crust" at all, but I have only been to the one on Broadway, so I can't comment on the original location. I do find it doesn't keep that well, and is much better when consumed fresh out of the extra hot oven, so carry-out is preferable to delivery.

We just got our first delivery from Gigio's. It will not only be our last but we're tossing about half the pizza in the garbage. Despite a surprisingly good crust, everything about this pizza was below subpar: canned mushrooms, overcooked green peppers, weak (barely even there) sauce, and way too much cheese. We eat more than our share of pizza (by delivery) and have, I think, been pretty open-minded. Plus, I hate to throw food out. Even mediocre food. But this wasn't mediocre; it was bad.

For those who wonder what pizza we DO like, I'll offer Apart, Spacca Napoli, Great Lake, and Coalfire. Not to mention the vast middle ground of acceptable pizza. And, though we didn't toss it, neither of us liked the generally well-regarded Pat's.

IMHO, Pat's hasn't been the same since they moved from Sheffield to Lincoln. Back in the day, they were my bi-monthly mainstay, even though every once in a while the Carry Out/Delivery Pizza came arrived home over salty. Didn't enjoy either of the few pies I've had since their relocation, and haven't been back in probably a half-decade.

The Pat's on south Clark is solid, just had one the other day. For those in the south loop or west loop it's a great thin crust choice. I haven't had a north side Pat's since they moved from Sheffield, they don't deliver to my Edgewater address but the south loop location delivers to my job.

As an outspoken advocate of Gigio's, I can only say that I order the pepperoni and cheese or maybe sausage and cheese. When dining on Gigio's pizza it is pointless to focus outside of meat, grease, bread and cheese.. Honestly, other than pizza, I think the remainder of their menu is fried stuff... My wife yells at me from ordering from here because I can't get her a salad. You see, my wife feels that if the pizza joint serve's a salad, the overall healthiness value of the pizza joint increases. Mind you, we never bother to order the salad, but knowing it is there makes it better.... I guess...

Back to Gigio's and their lack of fresh veggies.. What I like to imagine is that there are no fresh vegetables within a 200 foot radius of the place, which is part of a grand conspiracy conjured up as a flying 'FU' to Wolfgang Puck. Of course this is probably the bourbon talking (typing) and Gigio's is really just a mom and pop joint that 'do what they do' and have no good reason to change.

However , I have never had an issue with the sauce strength nor the cheese ratio issues you brought up - as far as I know "too much cheese" = "chupacabra" (unless you are lactose intolerant)
