Tub Tim Thai has been nominated for a GNR Award and as a result, to provoke discussion, the Evanston Lunch Group has planned its October lunch at TTT. Monday Oct. 6, 12:30 p.m. (Tub Tim means ruby in Thai).

    Join us if you can.

It is true that when we eat in Evanston, the meals are for Evanstonians only  but fortunately for foreigners, TTT is in Skokie.

I feel obligated to post that I may have unintentionally sabotaged this event: when requesting a spice level, in deference to newcomers who seemed genuinely concerned about heat (and per the suggestion of the waiter that heat could be added through condiments) I requested non-spicy.

This meal was not as good as the one I had last month, though I still loved the one-bite salad and the crispy fish salad. We had also had Larb Nar at last month's meal (which was ground chicken, not pork as I recalled) and papaya salad - I'm inclined that salads are where this restaurant really shines. I wonder if some of the other flavors were also toned-down to gringo along with the spice levels; I found a lot of the food to be somewhat bland, if cooked well. I hope others will continue to check out Tub Tim Thai and report back to see if this was an anomoly or if my first meal was one.

Our spice-averse newcomers (so new they don't seem to have signed up to attend) did, understandably, kind of drive the ordering. I think spicier would have been better. The one-bite salad was the standout dish to me. I also liked the crispy fish salad with its fried-to-a-crisp sardines (or whatever little fish they are). Unfortunately, the papaya salad never made it down to my end of the table, despite my great seat next to our photographer, nr706 :( . I also enjoyed the charcoal-grilled chicken which had a nice, if completely mild, charcoal taste. The other dishes were good but not outstanding.

If TTT were close to my house, I would certainly go there. It's way better than my nearest Thai (Siam Pasta). I will give TTT a try again, but for a neighborhood Thai place, I'd choose Elephant over TTT if I'm driving 15 minutes to get there.

I'm sorry, EvA - I edited my post to indicate we'd had those dishes at the meal last month, which I'd remembered too late were standouts that we missed today. I think it's worth a trip back to see if changing the ordering style would make a difference.

I thought the soup we had on our visit was by far the weakest dish of the meal. I don't think soup is their specialty.

Based on my single experience at TTT, I don't think they really have a default spice level. In fact, they actually seemed geared toward customizing on this aspect, which makes me think that it probably didn't have quite as big an impact on today's lunch as MHays worries it might have. As much as wish today's lunch was more unconditionally loved (because I really enjoyed my experience there), I'm guessing you were served a meal that was, for the most part, representative of what the restaurant offers.

If anyone in the group is also a regular at TTT, I'd be curious to get their take on it.

Thanks, Steve, for the tip. But we love Thai soups, so I'm really sorry to hear that they're weak.
