Unfortunately, I am going to be unable to join you. Have a terrific time.

Sadly, two Devon-a-thoners had to cancel but happily Ursiform and Moetchandon have been moved from the wait list to the yes list, so welcome!

Weather report so far looks very promising and I'm looking forward to a crisp fall day of delightful eating and company on Devon Ave.

I realize I haven't posted about budgeting. At the carry-out places, you will obviously be able to spend as much or as little as you want. A samosa was $1 for me at Kamdar Plaza. Pastries and goods were only a dollar or two at Tel Aviv Bakery. As for the sit down meals at Uncle's, Uru-Swati, and Hae Woon Dae, I am estimating somewhere in the $10-15 range at the most - most likely closer to the $10 depending on the quantity we order. As much as possible, please try to come with currency in fives and singles as that'll make us pay up and move along more quickly. Thank you and see you Sunday at 10 at the Tel Aviv Kosher Bakery!

 My car is not doing well, and I just realized that if I bring it in Saturday as planned, I have no way of getting to this event in enough time to get to most places. So it looks like I'll have to bow out. If someone else can take my place, here's your chance! I'm really very sad about this, and I'm sorry I have to cancel so late! I'm looking forward to the photographic retelling on Monday.

We will miss you Pie Lady but I'll go ahead and add hungryinchicago+1 and epoisses to our group. It brings us to 17 but I think 2 over is manageable since we may lose a person or two over the course of the day.

Let me know if any more spots open up -- my husband and (non-eating) baby would join us if there was room. Thanks!

I'm so appreciative that I've been added to the list but regretfully must give my spot to someone else--work calls.

Regretfully both Ellen and I must cancel.

Hope the weather holds and the Devon-a-Thon gods are smiling.

Many thanks to Hellodali for planning a great day down and around Devon Ave. I had a great time. The company, the food, the ambiance, the weather... it all worked well.

I took a fair amount of photos and you can see them HERE. Some favorites, though...

Georgian Bakery hachapuri (it wasn't on the schedule, but it was a worthwhile detour)

The hachapuri was new to me and perhaps was the most surprising thing I ate today - quite decadent. We shared some nice salamis from Three Sisters. And this was my first visit to Uru Swati and it was some of the best Indian I've eaten in a long while.

I'm already looking forward to the next-a-thon.

Thanks to Hellodali for organizing this event, you did a wonderful job. I've been to a few events with NR706 and recently joined LTH and am very happy that I have. The company was wonderful and I appreciated that the group was small enough that I was able to have the opportunity to talk to and get to know more about the other LTHers. It was a wonderful Sunday treat.

Many thanks to Dimitra for organizing such a diverse walking tour of the western end of the Devon Ave. environs. I left stuffed, but not uncomfortably so. I also left with a few pictures, but I'll try not to duplicate what Mike's already posted.

Everything looked good at Tel Aviv Bakery - I opted for a sticky bun. It cost a little over $1, and would easily go for two or three times as much at your local Starbucks. Unlike many I've had, this wasn't overly sweet. Even the innards were good.
    Image

We sampled several types of sausages, mostly of Russian origin, at the nearby Three Sisters deli.
    Image

And our intrepid tour guide made a real find — roast beef and gravy.
    Image

At Georgian Bakery, I found the oven used to bake the hachapuri interesting.

At Uncle's Kabob, I particularly enjoyed the lamb shank, with a soaked bread-like starch in the stew portion.
    Image

We also shared the potato chop, with rice (and a spinach sauce for the rice, not shown)
    Image

    And, of course, falafel:
    Image

Our next stop, Kamdar Plaza, had a host of exotic ingredients, although some seemed strangely familiar.
    Image

A few of us ventured down the street to Fresh Farms, where we found an interesting Indian variety of bitter melon.
    Image

Uru Swati, with its modern, faux-urban walls, made us the legendary Paper Masala Dosa - essentially a crepe on steroids.
    Image

The Dahi Batata Puri was, surpringly but refreshingly, served cool.

    Vegetable Jalfrezie?

    Ragla Dd Hi

    Green Kachori
    Image

and a chickpea dish whose name I don't remember
    Image

Finally, we waddled down to one of my personal favorites, Hae Woon Dae, where we sat in a private room on the heated floor, to start with dumplings
    Image

    and a beautiful seafood pancake
    Image

I didn't get a photo of the bul go gi on the live coal grill, but I did get a shot of the spicy squid.
    Image

A slightly tiring day, filled with stimulus overload, yet as usual the best part was the company. And some discussion speculated about where the next A-Thon might be ...

Mike and Tom - thanks for the excellent photo documentation of a fun and tasty day. It was a blast to plan and host and I so appreciated everyone's good company and good spirits. We realized at the end of the day that our three sit-down meals together totalled less than $20 a person. People spent other varying amounts on pastries and sausages and other goodies. So you could conceivably create your own Devon-a-thon, and depending on the size of your group, eat three or more meals on Devon for probably less than $25.

It looks like you all had a wonderful time! I'm quite jealous, but you've made it easy for me: I'll print out most of these photos, walk up to the counter, and say, "I want that".

If I didn't have but 88 cents, I'd be off for a Hatchapuri right now. I went two weeks before D-a-T II and now I know what the fuss is about. Because of the amount of cheese, I've decided that the dairy within makes these healthy snacks and they should be eaten often, lest I contract osteoporosis.

Tom - some seriously good photos there, especially given that, as the conscientious one of us, you typically end up with the utilitarian task of documenting everything quickly with a pocket camera while the rest of us chow. This is nice art, particularly the macro of the sticky bun and the last one of the grill. Bravo.

Thanks, Matt, but the truth is I only bring the camera so that the dishes will come in front of me before anyone else has a chance to dig into them.
