Can anyone recommend a good butcher in Northern Lake County. I have to go to Wilmette or into the city for prime beef and I'd like to find something closer, if possible. If they make sausages, that would be a plus!

    Thanks!

I don't have an answer but I second the question.

For Thanksgiving last year we ate at the home of friends in Mundelein. They served us a turkey as well as a prime standing rib roast (prime rib). Both were superb, restaurant quality meats. They got them at:

The Daily Grind (no, it is not a coffee shop, the name refers to their freshly ground beef) behind the Village Market in downtown Lake Bluff is small, but they have good stuff and their prices are reasonable. I dont think they carry prime though. They have a smoker on the premises, and make some decent pulled pork (ask for it without the sauce). They are knowledgeable, and I am sure that they would special order anything that they dont carry.

Not exactly north Lake county but very good. I've had good luck with them getting special cuts (parts?), calf's heart.
My wife loves their roasts but I don't like the way she cooks them.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I've been to Tony's (the one in Libertyville) and the Daily Grind. I definitely like Tony's better, especially after one of counter guys @ the Daily Grind got a little snippy with me when I declined to take a boneless pork shoulder when I asked for one with the bone-in for pulled pork. Hello, it adds flavor!

I've been in Dorfler's but we went late in the day and were in a rush so I didn't have time to really get the full experience.

I'm really hoping to find a Zier's type place, where I can make a quick dash on a weekend, without making it a 3 hour meat quest.

Not exactly northern Lake County but well worth the trip. We used to live in DuPage County and would drive there over shopping the local butchers. Tom's been in the biz for a LONG time and has always provided quality product. He makes really good sausages too. He makes a fresh andouille for me and then I smoke it. Yum!

Have you tried Antioch Packing House? It's on Route 83 just south of the IL/WI border. We're there every weekend in the summer when they have their home-made salads to go along with all their great meats. They have several varieties of homemade sausage: Polish, Italian, Brats, Andouille, Weiners, sometimes they have Prasky & Liversausage. They have several smokers and there are always a variety of smoked meats. including pig ears for the dogs... It's an odd space, you walk in and wonder what the ? and then walk up a few stairs and through the huge door into the refrigerated u-shaped shop... Being your jacket it's quite chilly in there. We're getting ready to order our Fresh Turkey for Thanksgiving. If Antioch is too far North, there is a Tony's Butcher shop in Grayslake, Rt 83 and just north of Center street. I've only been there once or twice...
