Join LTHers to honor Maxwell Street Market with their Great Neighborhood Restaurant Award this Sunday, Nov. 9 at 10:30am. We will be presenting the plaque to Assistant Commissioner of Consumer Services Bernadette Williams, the Chicago liaison for the Market, and will follow up with the usual LTH overindulgence in all things guts and masa.

Please join me - you can either post so we'll be expecting you, or just come on down!

    I'm in.

For those thinking of doing a mole for their turkey this Thanksgiving, this event will provide an excellent opportunity to pick up chilies, nuts, etc.

    HI,

I plan to attend. Where will we be meeting?

    Regards,

Woops! We'll be meeting at 10:30 (and presenting) by the big red M at the corner of Roosevelt and Des Plaines.

I don't think I'll be there this week, but I have a quick suggestion for future meet-ups...
How about meeting at the other end? It's only about a block and a half from the Blue Line station.

Good idea. Next time when there are no photo opportunities to consider.

I think there are big "M"s at both ends of the market, IIRC.

Admittedly, the north end is less photogenic: No shrubby trees, and a lot less hustle and bustle. Just a couple of warehouses, and the booths sort of peter out before reaching the corner.

Thank you all who came down in the cold for our quick photo-op! It was a brisk morning, even considering the hot churros Sparky and I used as handwarmers as soon as we got there, marvelling at the churro-filling machine which I somehow hadn't noticed before.

Apparently the certificate and sticker will be displayed in the Maxwell Street Market office, which is now located inside the market itself. Commissionioner Williams was very excited to hear that the Market had fans online, and assured us that it's a part of Chicago and is here to stay. She also said that they plan to have live music at the performance space in the summer months.

True to my post above, I found the taco de montalayo: it still reminds me of giblet gravy, though this time I did notice some overtones of spice and heat that were much appreciated on a cold day. Sparky had a licuado de Sandia and a Chocolate Mexicana to warm up, and made friends with the people at our table while waiting for me to get food. We then went in search of a new winter jacket and the promise of a toy that I'd bribed him with earlier. I was too cold and hungry to take pictures of my meal (and montalayo, while delicious, isn't really photogenic) but I found this stand all the way at the far end of the market, around a corner:

Lovely. How fortunate we are in Chicago, that even the streets and gutters serve up delicious, well-seasoned food!
