I got a new oven thermometer for Christmas. It's the model I asked for (this one), but I didn't think about how hard it would be to read. The one I have is a round one with the temperatures clearly marked. The glass is cracked and there's a lot of baked-on crud, so I thought it was time for a new one.

Any recommendations for one that's accurate and under $20 or so?

Anyone want the one I got? Free to a good home!

There's a round Taylor oven thermometer in stores at Bed Bath & Beyond I've used that works well. It's a little over $5 - similar to this model http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product ... 738&RN=210

With one of the $5 off coupons - if you buy $15 or more - it's nearly free.

I'm interested in testing the OXO one too.

BTW did you ask for the other one because of its Cook's Illustrated high rating? You really have to check the dates on ratings. I'm finding that I really need to go back and update a lot of my ratings on CHOW.

    Louisa,

The Taylor Oven Dial Thermometer is the one I have, works well both in the oven and smoker. I'm a fan of the Taylor instant read thermometers and Taylor products in general.

    Enjoy,

I think I did see the Cook's Illustrated review of it, but it also got high reviews on Amazon.

I like that the OXO one is translucent so your oven light shines through it, but I like that the round Taylor one has the "350" right at the top- maybe it's just me being OCD, but I like that the most commonly-set temperature is in the 12:00 position.

My Taylor Connoisseur 503 oven thermometer just completely broke after a little over a year of use. I bought it b/c my old oven thermometer wouldn't fit on the racks of my new oven. The Taylor always read a little higher than the oven set temp, but I trusted it over the oven. Then it started to be a little erratic - sometimes agreeing with the oven set temp, sometimes way over. Last week, in the middle of Christmas cookie baking, it simply died. It read 450 with the oven off, and when I took it out of the oven and shook it a little bit, the needle started spinning freely. For an $18 product, I think 1.5 years is an unacceptable lifespan!
