If you don't like it, don't use it. Those that do can save a few bucks, which is especially important these days.

No, I'm not connected to them in any way. In fact, I'm still pissed that they closed the one by me, so now instead of a couple minute trip, we need to head up to Crystal Lake to go there.

And I think I mentioned it before, but if you dine at Fridays often, get their gift cards from Discover. $40 rebate buys you $45 card, saving you another 11% on your dining. Red Lobster and others have similar deals.

Friday's is imho, much better than applebee's or similar chains, and about on par with ruby tuesdays. Meaning that it can be an decent meal if you happen to be in franchise chainland with no other options. Their Jack Daniels offerings are decent, and you can even make yourself a chocolate coke or cherry coke, straight from the fountain where they pump in the syrup...
I'm not picky, I just have more tastebuds than you... ; )

I have actually been to a TGI Friday's twice in the last month. I have to admit that the foods item that I had - especially the Ultimate Macaroni and Cheese - was well prepared and better than many that I have had recently. And that dish id very reasonably priced at $5.95.

I used to head to Friday's frequently when I was travelling 200+ nights per year. They had a really extensive menu, large portions, and really outstanding, attentive service. I quit going there a few years ago when I moved to this area as the menu was dumbed down, the dishes were poorly executed, and the staff was poorly trained.

J R, keep posting the deals.

I discovered this site a while back, and have posted only occasionally due to a certain vibe that some posters send off. This post sums it up for me, and in my opinion, really is unnecessary.

Not everyone enjoys the same thing, nor does everyone have the same means to enjoy certain things. That different people post about different things is what makes this board an interesting read for me, and I credit the moderators who accept those who want to post on haute cuisine or Hot Dog stands and everything in between.

Keep the posts coming, be they about chains or great neighborhood finds or the great Chicago legends. I enjoy LTH, as a poster and a reader, especially when all who post are treated with respect for their opinions and tastes.

In all honesty, places like TGI Friday's are pretty much the antithesis of what LTH Forum is all about and such posts are almost guaranteed to be met with a certain amount of sarcasm and ridicule. It comes with the culture.

    Without a doubt, steve.

What I believe we do here at LTHForum is "fight the good fight" for all things culinary, be they haute or hot dog (as you said, mss60614).

I firmly believe that places like TGI Friday's fall outside of that spectrum, and to that end, they will be met with my derision. I am not opposed to chains, as a rule, but they do start with a handicap in my book. I have eaten at all the chains mentioned here and I never hope to again. I'd be happy if they all closed and were replaced with something else.

I also firmly believe that places like TGI Fridays, in spite of the fact that many people think they make tasty food, damage our culinary culture, something I consider this forum a defender of. To that final point, my sarcasm was, as I see it, completely necessary.

Finally, no one restaurant, recipe, or chef is immune from ridicule or sarcasm on this forum. Whether it is a chain or a mom-n-pop store, if it sucks, people will say so. mss60614, remember that there is a difference between attacking a person and an opinion. For example,

Personal attack (uncalled for and not allowed on this forum):
"You are an idiot for enjoying that food."

Criticism of opinion (fair game, and what makes this forum work):
"I think the food that you love sucks".

    All the best,
    Michael

Funniest post i've seen on LTH in some time. ^^

Personally, I feel that people who give places like TGI Friday's, Applebee's, Chili's, etc are helping enable a problem that is hurting our country's overall standards for food by helping these places stay in business.

I recently took a road trip to Austin and it was a chore to find a single place on the way there that was convenient to stop at that actually served good food. The local Bennigan's was off the hook though at every stop. ugh

So, to each their own, but i wasn't surprised at all by the responses nor do i think they were innapropriate or personal attacks in the least.

I think that there is a line that can be drawn between having a strong opinion and deriding the opinion of someone else. Let's remember that this thread began with a post offering a buy one, get one coupon, not offering any strong opinion. I think that being met with sarcasm for trying to be nice is wrong. If I offered someone something that they didn't like, I would hope they would answer, "No, thanks", or something like it, rather than, "No way, that's nasty!" Words are powerful and should be chosen carefully.

If you don't want to use the coupon that's up to you. Offering up needless sarcasm and defending this as the culture of this board and something to be expected takes for granted that all posters understand an unwritten culture. I tried to find a mission statement or something like it where this culture was iterated, but I was unable to.

I heartily support strong opinions and their place on this board, but I always try to remember that there is a person on the other end of the post. I can disagree heartily without crossing the line into "derision", "sarcasm" and "ridicule", to use other posters' words.

    Jeff

I think you have to put these things in context. Not do you ever buy so-and-so or eat at such-and-such, but what is your overall pattern? I feel that no one living a middle-class existence in chicago is keeping their nose completely clean as far as where their money goes. Stuff like TGIFriday's is a soft target. I happen to believe that restaurants on that level are a poor value, but I find it hard to get nasty about people wanting the comfort and fun of a restaurant experience within their means. Especially the way people are hurting these days. If they want to sit down and be waited on somewhere close to home, and that's what's close to home, no problem as far as I'm concerned.

I'd sooner take the same amount of money I would spend for one meal at a hideous place like TGI Fridays and buy two meals at a nice, ethnic mom & pop type place that serves food with both flavor and a soul.

I should have added when I linked the correction above:

I kind of like TGIF. I was even forced to eat at one in Moscow in 2001 and, beyond admiring the way it looks in the Cyrillic alphabet, thought the execution of the American dishes was even better than some of the locations here. It is what it is - relatively quick and cheap, good mudslides, potato skins, and they know how to work the deep fryer for your various sauced chicken pieces. Lots of variety - certainly freezer-to-heating implement stuff, but that doesn't stop us from buying frozen dumplings at the H-Mart or Katy's, so I refrain from sneering. I'll certainly take it over Denny's, Perkins, or Bakers Square. No, we're not the target demographic of any of these places, but the thought that our palates have evolved so completely beyond the point of even listening (doesn't your palate have ears?) when one of these chains is mentioned is disconcerting.
