happy_stomach wrote:The recipes question is an excellent one. I was mainly thinking about eating and talking about baking, but questions about recipes will surely arise. I think if recipes can be swapped, that'd be fantastic. If some people would rather not share a recipe and only the dessert itself, that'd be fine by me, but, again, others can offer opinions. I don't want to make up the rules for the group.

Generally, I would love to swap recipes too. But I was thinking of bringing my (name undetermined) chocolate mint cheesecake, if that is considered a pie, and since it's the only recipe I ever thought up all by myself I'd like to keep it secret. But I don't want to offend so I can always bring something else so I can share the recipe too.

pie lady: speaking for myself, it's perfectly understandable if you want to keep a recipe to yourself. if you've created something delicious, though, it'd be a shame not to let others taste it. i don't think anyone should feel embarrassed or awkward about sharing a dessert but not a recipe. i hope others would agree.? justjoan

Pie Lady- I won't be offended if you don't want to share your recipe. It only makes things more fun and challenging as we try to reverse-engineer it.

P.S. I'll announce my dessert in about 5 days after I receive my latest Amazon order. :)

I have no problem with anyone wanting to keep the mystery surrounding their dish.

As long as I get to taste it!!!

    <smile>

I believe I will be making an assortment of cookies. Haven't decided which ones -- but hopefully they will all be delicious. There's also a possibility of some sort of pastry instead. I'll let you all know before the event.

I agree that sharing recipes would be nice, but not required to participate.

I'm not sure if I'm the one you had in mind, but I do have a culinary school degree and have spent time working as a professional baker. (Although I'm out of the industry now.) Obviously I have no problems with a professional baker participating - is the general consensus that it's ok?

I'm pretty excited about the exchange. I don't bake nearly as much as I'd like simply because I can't eat them all myself (and my wife doesn't like having them around constantly.) This is a perfect excuse for me to bake more.

Yup, you were the one I was thinking of. I'm a fan of inclusivity, so unless someone objects here, professional bakers are welcome and secret recipes are fine.

Hello-- somewhat new-ish LTHer here. Is it too late to join the wait list? At this point, does it make sense to have a 2nd one in March? I can host. (My dessert TBD-- a cookie of some kind.)

I was actually considering suggesting an event like this last Fall . . . then I blew a lot of time wondering whether there should be a theme of some kind, or if it would be fun to work through a particular book or genre. Enough with that-- let's get started!

    Hi Inasreen,

Welcome! I was just PM'ing with some people about a date for a second exchange, but if you'd like to call it and host, please go ahead. If you change your mind, let me know. I'm prepared to host a second exchange in mid-March.

    All right, no more thinking.

It's either my chocolate mint cheesecake or sour cream apple pie.

    Done.

Ms. Stomach, is there anything I can do to make dinner go smoother? Bring a wine, paper plates, etc.? You'll be doing more work, after all...

Both of those possibilities sound excellent.

As for dinner, I should be fine. I'm planning on just making two soup options (gotta leave room for dessert!)--a heartier soup (maybe a turkey chili) and a vegetable soup (glazed carrot or a creamy squash... anything that will let me use my still-new immersion blender). I've got lots of bowls and a dishwasher. I'll have wine, beer, coffee, tea. I'll let you know if I think of anything closer to the date, but otherwise I'm happy to do what I can to facilitate the dessert swapping. :)

I'd be happy to contribute wine as well as glasses, if need be. If you looked in my cabinets, you'd know I have a ton of wine glasses (and I live close enough to you that it's no biggie to bring them over).

OK - I'm having trouble deciding what to bring. I can't decide if I want to do something elegant, like a tart, or something trashy. But I suppose I should decide soon otherwise all varieties of desserts will be claimed and I'll be left bringing tapioca pudding.

Sure - anyone subscribed to this forum got an email informing them of a new message. If they don't log on to LTH regularly, they may have missed it otherwise.

Inasreen--do you still want to be added to the waitlist for this date? I wasn't sure if you wanted to do both exchanges.

For any waitlisted folks or anyone interested in an exchange but who can't make March 2nd, Inasreen has proposed a second exchange for Sunday, March 22nd.

We'd love to have you. You're on the waitlist.

Just FYI to all: I'm about to leave the country and will be without internet access until February 23rd, so I'll update this thread when I return as needed.

Just a little bump. I've just PM'd my address to the folks on the participant list, so we should be set for Monday.

I'm rethinking my planned contribution after hearing so-so reports on the grapefruit yogurt cake recipe I was going to use. For some reason, I have a really strong urge to use a loaf pan, but I'm also considering making a sweet potato cake/pie/flan of some kind, perhaps an Italian cookie or maybe the Gramercy Tavern's Gingerbread? I'll decide soon.

I have been somewhat lax on my LTH reading lately and completely missed this until now. Which is okay since I couldn't have made it tomorrow anyway, but I definitely will have to check back for April's date.

I think what you have planned will work.

I have my cake w/me at work, and I carried it in my cake container. I'm just planning to bring home the goodies in that container after I share my cake w/the others. We can definitely discuss how to handle it for future months. Hope this helps?

A big thanks to happy-stomach for the great idea and for hosting tonight. What an indulgence to have such a spread of lovingly made desserts to try and then even better to have some to take home and share. Thanks to everyone for the wonderful treats and I look forward to the next one. And to the pictures that will be posted soon, I'm sure.
