OK, I'll jump on that sword. I saw this article, posted elsewhere by eli. In addition to summing up my feelings about eating cute fuzzy creatures, it discusses issues surrounding sustainability - it's a good summation of how I feel about it (except I don't think that a frutarian's hands are really clean, either.)

Good call - I saw that article and thought of this thread as well.

Vital Info was patient enough to field a number of questions and challenges with an open mind, both on and off board, and I want to re-link a few items from this and other threads which formed useful points of departure.

Recent Cecil Adams (Straight Dope) column in response to Mikey S. on a Chicago public market

Local Beet discussion forums, picking up

2007 Time article on eating local which briefly touches on differing approaches and mentalities to the movement both here and abroad.

Freakonomics blog post on regional eating with hyperlinks to earlier posts and reactions

Please either read the positive connotation of "chic," or sub in "aesthetic," in my earlier post. I consider myself lucky to have time, geography, and resources like LTH to be able to access and evaluate foods and strategies to make me happier and our regional producers stronger. I include GNR-grazing among these activities, since many of the proprietors strike a good balance of growing or buying their ingredients locally, and importing responsibly.
