Before catching the Milwaukee bus to Ogilvie, I picked up falafel sandwich from Sultan's Market. I ate it in the food court after a 15 min bus ride. I was surprised that the pita held up so well since it was quite full. As for the sandwich, I was excited to see that they put hummus in the pita, but I was disappointed. The hummus was quite bland, and the falafel was nothing special, kind of dry and cold. There was a big batch sitting on top of the fryer, and I saw that my falafel came from the batch in the counter. I should've specified for the fresher falafel.

justjoan wrote:i've been eating at sultan's market since its inception, when it was a grocery store, then they slowly added on falafel, etc. the quality has been going downhill in the last few years. i've never really seen any concern for high quality there. the salad bar has contained spoiled food, the falafels are often cold and dry; my last one i asked for baba ganoush instead of the standard jerusalem salad on it because i loathe cucumbers, but got the cukes anyway. i was with a friend once who took back the salad bar to complain that one of the items was fermented and they didnt apologize, offer him a substitute or his money back. i keep saying i won't go back, but it is convenient for meeting friends for a quick meal, so i keep returning. but i've pretty much had it with them. just because it's cheap (though the salad bar really isnt), doesn't mean you can't waste your money all the same. justjoan

Sultan's has jumped the shark, for sure by the time they opened the Clark street location. I was never a big fan of room temp felafel, but I used to get their shwarma, and that lamb thing they'd put over rice. When those dishes were under $5 and great. The yuppies came and found it, they raised their prices and the quality went down. When have we heard this story before?

    My current favorite falafel is

    Naf Naf Grill
    1095 E. Ogden Ave
    Naperville IL 60563
    630-904-7200

But even in my family not everyone agrees. My daughter finds the outside crust not hard enough. I like them for that very reason. Naf Naf is so busy now that your falafel is usually only a minute or two old when you get it on your plate, so it really has not had time to "setup." I love that!
