This may be a long shot but...

I'll be staying at the Boca Raton Resort next week. Anyone know a good place for sushi near the hotel?

    Josh,

Been a couple of years, but I've very much enjoyed the sushi at Kyoto in Delray. It's a bit of a hip/sakitini type joint, but the fish is pristine with an interesting selection, even the occasional sport fish, not to mention fresh grated wasabi root for a small upcharge.

After a healthy meal of sushi you can follow up with Fran's Chicken Haven on Federal Highway in Boca.

    Enjoy,

kyoto is the one you want. i used to live down the st from it. i've had fresh uni there (not pre fileted). the kyoto tuna tempura app is fantastic. when chef lee was there he used to use lot's of day boat stuff that was swimming earlier that day. he's been gone for awhle though.

Well, we went to Kyoto in Delray Beach for lunch today. It was pretty good, but certainly not the best sushi I've ever had (not that I was looking for the best sushi ever, just saying).

We started with an order of the Black & Blue Toro. Seared pieces of toro with a little bit of foie gras and caviar on top. While all components of this dish are great individually, they just didn't work when put together.

The sashimi was all of very good quality. I was able to try the toro, salmon, kampachi, marlin, and scallops. I had no complaints with anything but the scallops, which may have been a bit past there prime.

We also had two rolls. One with tuna and salmon wrapped in cucumber (also had some masago and asparagus inside) and another with shrimp tempura one the inside and avocado on the outside. Both were pretty tasty and nicely presented.

If in the area and craving some sushi, I would go back.

    Important sushi in Boca update!!!

Morimoto has opened in the Boca Raton Resort. Not sure if it's open to non-guests/non-members, but if you're staying here you should definitely check it out.

Not cheap ($14/piece for otoro...hello!), but certainly some of the best sushi I've ever had anywhere.

A dear friend of mine is a member. I asked him about it and if they allow non members in and here's his take:

Small but pretty room. They get a good crowd. Limited menu and high prices. I like your friends place in Delray off Pineapple Grove better (Katsu, mentioned above)

Strictly rolls, a few soups no unfiltered sake! and they encourage the unwashed hotel guests and their friends.

He sent a link to the menu as well. http://www.bocaresort.com/pdfs/Morimoto.pdf

Your friend may have old info. It's not strictly rolls. They have a pretty extensive selection of nigiri, with a lot of stuff that you don't find around Chicago (shad, cod roe, goldeneye snapper, etc). They will also be revamping the menu a bit to include some lunch combos.

For a lower priced alternative, Daimatsu is right out the back gate of the hotel. I would put quality on par with Katsu, with prices far more reasonable than Morimoto.

You are correct. On closer inspection the menu he sent me lists all types of sushi and sashimi.

Morimoto was not yet open when we were there last year, but I'll + one for Daimatsu.

    This year's update...

Morimoto - still good, still obscenely expensive.
Daimatsu - pretty much just as good as Morimoto this time around, and at about 1/2 the price. Also, bonus points added for a sign on the door proudly proclaiming "No cream cheese, no brown rice".

It looks like Morimoto is probably off the list for next year. I think we're going with Daimatsu for our Boca sushi fix from now on.

    Update:

Daimatsu is no longer open for lunch. Very disappointing development.

Not sushi, but in the same shopping center a place called Maxie's has opened. The owners are Chicago transplants and they're doing Chicago specialties like Italian beef, Chicago style hot dogs (they're bringing in Vienna Beef dogs), etc.

We checked it out for lunch one day and it was pretty good. I'd recommend it for something different than just about anything else in Boca.
