Finally got My Bride over there for Breakfast/Lunch after a miscue last Monday (closed Mondays. Even UBAA was closed with a power outage).

She had her standard, 2 eggs over easy, bacon... with the addition of Old Potatoes and house made bread.

It easily took the top honors of The Best Breakfast she has had in a long time. I think she has the seasoning figured out on the Old Potatoes and is eager to try them at home.

I had 'The Gary' with the Old Potatoes and a bowl of Split Pea soup.

What? No Jalapenos? :) Great sandwich, nice and greasy as a patty melt should be and the soup, nice and thick with a surprise chunk of ham once and a while. All it needed was a dash of salt. I really enjoyed the crunchy bits in the old potatoes.

My Bride is glad Patty's is not closer as we would be over there every day. :)

With a month and a half left we can make a few more trips over there before they close.

Update on her closing... August 13th was the date mentioned and she is thinking about taking some time off and then 'maybe' opening at a new location. If anyone is interested, the 3 store fronts (of which Patty occupies one) is being sold for $450K.

House made bread? Should I ask for that, or is that the toast? I'll be there a couple of times in the next week.

I know the hamburger buns are homemade. I thought the regular toast wasn't, but maybe some are.

Anyone know what the liquid is that Patty uses to moisten the Old Potatoes when they are on the grill? Chicken stock?

I've had the hamburger, and that bun is great. We'll see what Panther meant.

I figured it was clarified butter.

yes, the toast is home made as is all her breads and the oil she uses is actually clarified butter made from real butter, someone also told me she makes her own mayonnaise... try that at home.

I'd be careful about confusing someone as they may read too much into "all her breads". All the breads Patty makes (her breads) are house made but not all the breads Patty serves are. When you are asked what kind of toast you want with your breakfast the usual suspects of white/wheat/rye/etc. are most definitely not house made and you must ask for the house made (white) bread if that's what you want (and don't be surprised if they've run out).

Really? Ok, I'll remember that next time.

I biked to Patty's today from Highland Park for breakfast. There were maybe 6 people in there. Suzy was off too. To my shock, one of my friends ordered a burger (before 9:00). The three of us had a solid meal, and my toast wasn't anything special, so next Friday when I go back, I'll ask for house made bread.

i apologize if this news has already been posted-i searched but couldnt find any post announcing the great news that patty's will not be closing in august, as they had planned. i just spoke to susie (patty's sister) and she said they had worked out a deal with the bank (which had foreclosed on the property) and they will be open for the foreseeable future. wonderful news for them , and for everyone who loves their homemade burger buns, old potatoes, and all the other terrific food. justjoan

Thanks for the great news. I had a feeling the way the date kept being postponed to the future, it would be resolved this way.

since patty's is the only business open in her little strip mall, it makes sense for the bank to accept rent money and let her stay. but i suspect she won't be there forever. and i know both women (patty and susie) were looking forward to a much needed vacation. i hope they are there another 20 years, but i think this is just a temporary stay of execution (if a less suspenseful one than a month by month reprieve). justjoan

I was in the restaurant the day before the good news hit (Tuesday August 4th) and the real issue was that there are improvements needed in the building for their insurers to renew their coverage. The bank who holds the property in foreclosure hadn't figured out whether or not they wanted to invest in the property.

Obviously, if you want to sell a commercial property, it works better when there are tenants paying rent. I suppose the bank did the math, and figured out the improvements would be a good investment for them.

In any event, I was bowled over by the food. I tried the ham hash, and it was truly delicious - and I too am convinced they are using clarified butter to create the great crust on the potatoes. The homemade white toast was very good, and I cannot wait to take my wife in for a burger for lunch!

The sisters are just fantastic - open, and just delightfully uncensored. I hadn't been before, but I will be becoming a regular.

It's just good, ol' fashioned diner food - but it is a throwback to a previous era. Patty's Diner deserves our patronage.

I took my kids (6 and 2) to lunch at Patty's today around 1pm. I was a little nervous after previous poster had a bad experience with kids.

We were sat, offered a high chair, sat right in the window. They couldn't have been more accommodating. Grilled cheese and fries for DD, Patty melt on a bun for me.

Delicious homemade iced tea and a small milk for my daughter

No one batted an eye that I didn't order for my two year old and they did not remotely try and rush us. Only disappointment: no soup on the weekends.

    Lunch for 3: $15 + tip
Maybe I should resurrect the most kid-friendly restaurants thread. My kids loved talking about all the stuffed animals in the windows.

RAB, my mom, and I paid our first visit to Patty's yesterday for breakfast. We walked in around 1030am on a Sunday and were pleased to find an available four top.

Service was just as I'd expect for a diner. Our orders were taken quickly, food delivered long before we felt we'd waited too long, and coffee cups regularly filled. The coffee was pleasantly drinkable - - while I prefer a stronger brew when I having just one cup, a lighter coffee is perfect when I'd like to continue drinking over the course of a meal.

I adored my corn beef hash with two eggs over easy and dry rye. On my next visit, I'd like to try the ham hash, but am going to have a tough time not repeating this first visit. RAB's burger and old potatoes was similarly tasty. It was difficult not to steal more/all of RAB's crispy, hot, peppery potatoes. And, the burger was simple and delicious. It was perhaps a bit closer to medium than I'd like (ordered medium rare), but was still juicy. Mom had the 2 plus 2 plus 2 (2 eggs, 2 pancakes, 2 strips of bacon). She was also happy.

While my mom is a trouper to come into the city quite often, it's great to find a no-wait brunch option nearer to her home. We'll definitely be back.

Patty’s Diner – Corned Beef Hash with Eggs

I stopped at Patty’s for breakfast with a friend this morning. My vegetable omelette was good – about average in comparison with other places I’ve had such an omelette and my friend, making his first visit to Patty’s, enjoyed his corned beef hash with eggs.

I think a couple other LTHers were in the room, but I didn't notice them until they were about to walk out the door (and I think I've only seen them one or two times before) - and, therefore, didn't greet them. Sorry. :(

    Bill,

Might have been me and the bride we were there around 9:30, but I know of at least two other LTHers who went to Patty's for breakfast around, though not exactly, the same time as us.

Patty's was active, if not exactly jammed, and my over easy, grits and ham a study in what most diners aspire to be.

    Enjoy,

Gary, I was at the restaurant at about 9:45. I'd have recognized you and your better half . . . but it wasn't the two of you I thought I saw. I was seated at a table and if you were over at the counter, near the grill then I would have missed you completely. We may have just missed, though. Yes, the restaurant was lively - which was good to see. Thanks.

Must have been the place to be yesterday but I was there after 10am so not me either. Biscuits and gravy were good, mostly because of the gravy . . . the biscuits didn't excite me. Corned beef hash was ok, but the corned beef a bit on the dry side for my liking.

After having not been there for a while, I had -- not surprisingly -- a very nice breakfast today at Patty's . . .

    Buttered Rye Toast
A really excellent order of toast. It was so quickly out of the toaster and onto the table, the butter hadn't fully melted, even though it was piping hot.

    Eggwhite Veggie Omelet, 'Old' Potatoes
I can't say this all-whites omelet was much more healthful than a whole-egg version would have been, and that was perfectly fine with me because I go to Patty's when I want to indulge (at least I rationalized it being a little better for me than it could have been). This was really tasty, which was probably because without the yolks, the butter it was cooked in really came through. Inside were mushrooms, onions, peppers, tomatoes and a nice gush of cheese, too. Potatoes, just like the toast, were damned near perfect -- crispy and well-seasoned with lots of aromatic black pepper.

I visited Patty's for the first time today and brought family/friends with me. I ordered the hamburger..and when I asked for it with a fried egg the waitress stopped me and said "wait...you want the Gary Burger right?" When I confirmed this, she winked and then the rest of table looked at me, trying to figure out the cryptic off-menu code and exchange that the server and I just had.

I had mentioned to the table before ordering, that I had read that Patty's had a great hamburger, corned beef as well as biscuts and gravy and they were very happy when their plates of corned beef hash and eggs came out. But oh man--did I get it when my burger came to the table. "Thanks a lot for holding out on us" and "What the hell?! I want a Gary" followed by a"you BETTER not eat all of that--save a bite for me". I lost about 1/2 of my burger today. Thank goodness I didn't have to share my old potatoes with them too. The ribbing continued on for the 20 min drive home as well.

Great food and I can't wait to come back again. I will be sure to clue everyone in on "The Gary" before orders are placed in order to ensure that I am able to eat my entire dish without sharing.

We decided we needed a diner breakfast treat before braving Costco, so off to Patty's we went.

My husband noticed Bicuits and Gravy on the window sign, but I didn't recall anyone saying anythign about them. Holy heck is the gravy good!!!

Dark brown. Tons of sausage, smooth texture with no hint of raw flor. This was amazing, made even better by a few drops of Tapatio.

The rest of our breakfast was great as usual. Gratis fried doughnuts in cinnamon sugar, An off-menu Mickey Mouse pancake for my daughter, plus a side of sausage. Ham has for me, Corned beef hash for my husband. Perfectly cooked eggs. Toast and One biscuit with a generous serving of gravy. Coffee, iced tea, milk.

And they were nothing but lovely to my 2 and 6 year old.

    LTH,

Stopped at Patty's for a light meal, just a couple of eggs and grits, was not going to even get toast. As I headed toward my favorite solo spot at the counter, just to the right of the grill, a burger flared sending sweet scented beef char across the room. I was lost, never even a contest, one med-rare Gary Burger and Old Fries please. Had a diet coke if that counts for anything. :)

    Enjoy,
