I've been there a few times and enjoyed the food and ambiance of this "rat pack" joint. The first time I was there I envisioned Frank Sinatra and the boys sitting in a corner booth holding court. Since the restaurant is nominated for a GNR, I thought it might be a good time to get a group together to see what this restaurant is all about, and get a few honest opinions of the nomination.

The food at Charcoal Oven isn't Alinea or Charlie Trotter's. It's good food prepared simply, and well, in an atmosphere that's certainly unique. It's the ambiance, consistency and the longevity of this restaurant that appeals to me most.

nr706 and I will be dining at GNR-nominated Charcoal Oven on Wednesday, around 7:30.

I wish we could join you but can't come that night! I ate at C.O. years ago and have fond memories of it. Enjoy!

If a fifth wheel won't make the ride too wobbly, I'd be pleased to join the 4 of you (by my count) on Wed. night.

I've been considering my comments for Charcoal Oven's GNR nomination, but to be honest, I haven't been there in over 18 months. I keep meaning to go back, but I always remember it on Sundays (they're closed), or at lunch (they're closed), etc. I definitely know I like certain items there (read blue cheese dressing!), but I could use a refresher course--or two--before posting on the GNR thread.

You'll recognize me when I get there--I'll be the one who looks like Angie Dickinson....
:o or is that  ?

"You're not going to like it in Chicago. The wind comes howling in from the lake. And there's practically no opera season at all--and the Lord only knows whether they've ever heard of lobster Newburg." --Charles Foster Kane, Citizen Kane.

Just bumping this to say it was a great time and a great meal and you can read about it and see pictures here. Those of you who keep driving past Charcoal Oven should really stop in.
