I was at my local Bass Pro Shop today. As I walked in they gave me a flyer about their restaurant. I have always known they had one, but I had never been. Today I visited it and looked at the menu and talked to the waitress. She seemed more enthused than normal waitresses when talking about the menu.

The menu looked interesting. It did not have as much game dishes as I would have expected. I know it might be viewed as a chain type restaurant. But I was wondering if anyone has a thought on BPS’ restaurant.

Each time a visit the Bass Pro Shop in Naples, FL (when visiting the out-laws) I suggest to whatever manager/assistant I can find that the store should consider offering a "catch-and-consume" menu. Guests could test-drive a new rod-and-reel combo and catch a nice bass in the aquarium and have it prepared to their liking in the restaurant. Think of the possibilities; bass sushi as fresh as it can get, a high-brow bass en papillote, heck - maybe even bass baked in fresh clay like they taught me in Boy Scouts years ago.

I think it's an idea whose time has come.

    Hi,

They had a restaurant in the Bass Pro Shop in Gurnee. The one time I aimed to go there, I learned they had closed it.

dodger, which Bass Pro Shop did you visit?

    Regards,
    Cathy2

The restaurant in the Bass Pro Shops is called the Islamorada Fish Company. The one I went to was in Bolingbrook, near the new Promenade.

It was pretty good. I guess it's a chain, although I believe it only has locations in Bass Pro Shops across the country.

It was good enough that I have wanted to go back. Here's the rub in that. I believe they change their menu fairly often. For example, the time we went, we had the following: Conch Fritters. Steamed Shrimp in Old Bay (tasted just as good as the pier bars in the keys). Grouper Portifino, which was grouper with a lobster sauce. It was very tasty. I can't remember what my wife had, but I remember she liked it.

Every time we say we want to go back, I check the online menu. None of the things I mentioned above are on the menu anymore. Strange because the Grouper Portofino was touted as their signature dish. In fact, last I checked, they didn't even have any grouper on the menu.

Maybe it's a seasonal menu that changes, but I don't know for certain. Based on what we had the one time, I would make a return trip if I was going to be in the area and needed a place to eat.

Actually, I just checked and the grouper in some form is back on the menu at the Bolingbrook location.

If you check the menu for the Islamorada, FL location, that is almost the exact menu formerly at Bolingbrook. Raw bar included.

I wonder if it just got too costly to ship the seafood inland and keep it fresh, and that's the reason that the menu is now different.

Cathy 2, it was the one in Bolingbrook. Oh, the flyer they gave me was on their two specials: 16 ounce T-Bone with baked potato for $15 and 1 ½ pounds of snow crab, corn, and red potatoes for $15.

I tried this place for lunch today. I was impressed. I had their New England chowder and a Cobb salad. I thought the chowder was excellent, very tasty and hearty. In my limited culinary experiences, one of the best I have had in the area.

The salad was decent. I can see me going back.
