Cookie Monster and I spoke at the picnic about having another single food centered exchange. We had a great time at her place for Dumpling Fest and at that time thought that we might do another featuring fruit dumplings. After a brief discussion,
we decided on soup. Here are the particulars:

    An Homage to Soup
    3:00 p.m., Sunday, October 25, 2009
Location: Ms. Ingie's House in Oakbrook Terrace (near the Oakbrook Center mall, Rt. 83 & 22nd Street)

    - The event is limited to 10 since that's how many I can comfortably sit around my dining room table. If we should be so blessed with Indian Summer, we can sit on my deck.
    - Bring any type of soup you wish. You don't need to double or triple the recipe as we'll be having a smaller portion of each soup. Six to 12 servings should be sufficient. Feel free to use my stove to heat your soup or bring it hot (unless you're bringing a cold soup). I can put five or six pots of soup on my stove and I have a couple of slow cookers, so we can keep soup warm in them as well.
    - I will have dishes, spoons, etc. as well as beverages. Any suggestions?

The guest list is as follows:

Ms. Ingie - Butternut Squash Soup
Cookie Monster - Cream of fresh pea and fresh bread
mrsm - Red Lentil or Roasted Tomato and Black Bean Soup
mrsm's guest - Orange and clove scented black bean soup
LAZ - Birnensuppe (German pear soup)
RheS - Rustic Whole (sort of) Wheat Bread
irisarbor - Ham and Split Pea Soup

    Hi,

I cannot make it. It's my Mom's birthday as well as the Beef symposium weekend. If I try to fit one more thing into that weekend, I will burst. :)

Great idea and hope I can make it another time.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

Sounds nice, count me in. I will probably bring a butternut squash soup. Do you mean Fri. the 25th or Sun, the 27th?

Looking at my calendar, it would be Sunday, October 25th. Does that still work for you?

Sadly, I think my schedule is too packed that weekend, but if there's a Soup II I'd love to join in on that one. I'll keep a look out!

I got the green light to attend your soup gathering. I plan to bring Italian sausage soup.

I am thinking of a cold dessert soup. He is wondering if, with all that soup, you'd like some bread.

I just made and tucked into the freezer an amazing ham and green split pea soup,
but if you think 2 types of split pea are too many,
    I'll create something different...

Iris: please bring your split pea soup. I have a new recipe for red lentil soup if the group is willing to let me experiment.

My guest is thinking of making potato leek soup.

Shorty and LAZ: If RheS and I each bring bread, that should be enough. The bread that I am planning to make is a braided egg bread with carmellized onions rolled into the braid.

Well the gathering is up to nine, unless Gooseberry still wants to attend. I am currently in the north woods and have to travel several miles to find wifi in order to post, so I may not answer posts for a few days.

I will be sending out pm to all attendees during the week with my address and directions. Please remember to bring plastic containers to bring your assorted soups home.

Yes, there is room. Mrsm already responded regarding the split pea soup. She has since found a couple of other recipes that she will choose from. See you on Sunday.

The cold dessert soup will likely be birnensuppe, German pear soup. I'm a little dubious about the amount of aniseed the recipe calls for and will probably cut it down.

RheS's bread will almost certainly be a semi-whole wheat type, since I was the only one to respond when Floriole bakery had a 50-pound sack of high-extraction, organic bread flour they were giving away on Twitter. (I wasn't familiar with this kind of flour until we got some -- it's basically whole wheat with most of the bran removed. If anyone who'll be attending would like to try this flour, send me a pm and we'll bring you some.)

RheS has been experimenting with adapting recipes from the Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day book. I told him I thought whole-wheat baguettes were kind of weird.

But he is new to baking, period -- let alone bread -- and not usually very enthusiastic about cooking, and I'm thrilled he's doing it at all. So I hope you will be encouraging and kind. :)

I think whole wheat baguettes sounds great!

As far as the soup, my mom used to make a soup with Bosc pears and green beans and smoked butt. My sister has been searching for the recipe and thinks she may have found something. It is also German.

Two people have already signed up to bring homemade bread. We're at eight people, so I think two kinds will be sufficient for now. But, that gives me an idea for our next gathering - Homemade Bread!
