In his column today, Pat Bruno stated that the closest In N' Out to Chicago is in Madison, WI......but he's nuts, right? Their site says nothing about this..

    If true, though, wow...

Not a chance. Closest one to Chicago is Vegas IIRC.

I wonder if Bruno or his intern/fact-checker simply looked at the location map and misinterpreted the starred cities as locations as opposed to the state capitals.

It looks like the one in Prescott, AZ is closer than the closest Las Vegas location by 9 miles, but you've got the general idea. Apparently Bruni's crew didn't do much in the way of fact-checking.

Matt, I think you've nailed it. Makes me wonder if Bruno or his intern/fact-checker knows that the starred cites are state capitals !?

They are creeping east. They are now in Utah as well. But unless they go corporate, it's unlikely they'll be expanding any further.

I agree that it is unlikely, ***BUT*** the third generation, age 26,has taken control and has been advised to go national.

There is a book out about the chain.

By the waym the reviews of In-n-Out in the Salt Lake City has been less than glowing but in the SLC area, there are a lot better hamburger options.

I think everyone who lives outside of California, Arizona, Colorado and Utah who has eaten at In N Out has advised them to go national. :D

I've moved to both San Diego and Phoenix from Chicago. Each time In-N-Out was a helping factor in my decision to move.
    GOOD TIMES!

I'm not sure how i feel about that (even setting aside quality issues).

One of the great things about In-n-Out is that, to me anyway, it really has a sense of place. The food is good, no doubt -- but it is hard for me to think of taking that food out of southern California.* Indeed, one of my non-negotiable meals for when I go home is In-n-Out, usually eaten from my car at one of the older (no inside seating) stores in Ontario/Pomona/Covina.**

BUT would that food be the same if I ate it in Chicago? Nope, not to me. Just like eating a beef sandwich wouldn't be the same in California. Or a dog with cream cheese wouldn't be the same on this side of the Cascades. Also in this category are Waffle House north of the Mason-Dixon line; Tim Horton's in a land where money is monochromatic; and White Castle anytime before 1 am.

That's an argument, anyway. Damn, I could go for a double double right now.***

*It seems to fit fine in Phoenix or Vegas or Silicon Valley, as they are pretty similar.
**Never, i assure you, while doing seventy down the 10, the 60 or the 91. :)
    ***Animal style? mais oui!

One of the problems of nationwide chains that originate in other parts of the country is that traditions just don't carry well. Waffle Houses in the south cook "southern style". Head north, and NOTHING tastes quite right. Ditto for Sonic.

Skyline Chili locations outside of Cincinnati are absolutely pathetic. They have to change the menu to draw "non-believers" in.

I like In-n-Out restaurants in Socal. However, in SLC, I would much rather head to Crown Burgers or Hires or a dozen other local chains.
