We may simply have very different opinions of what constitutes "Fish and Chips", Pie Lady.
Probably. All the fish & chips I've ever had looked similar to that. But the color profile! Beautiful!aschie30 wrote:I suppose it's fine as long as Pete's is serving filets of the very coveted and well-known species, "squarefish."*
*The breading is also very reminiscent of Gorton's fishsticks.
There's nothing wrong with Gorton's.

so good
I had a similar experience with Horizon brand chocolate milk:s4shon wrote:Lucerne light yogurt. I made the mistake of buying a few different flavors b/c they were on sale at Dominick's. It doesn't even qualify as yogurt in my book - just artificially flavored, gloppy yuckiness. Why would anyone bother wasting even 90 calories on this stuff is beyond me.

Pretzel dredge salty, low-rent fried chicken greasy topped with volcanically hot gummy sticky cheese product that could easily sub for wall spackle. Pillow soft bun could not contain the molten mess, as evidenced by my shirt and steering wheel, and after the first bite I was immediately sorry I had bought two. Well cooked fluffy soft egg deserved better than its sandwich mates.

The service has always been friendly, the breakfast foods and diner staples are fresh, tasty and consistent as are the specials (every now and then an "ethnic" dish from one of the kitchen staff will creep onto the menu). They also have a huge advantage as one of the few reliable 24-hour joints in Chicago.
If nothing else, the Golden Apple was the subject of a great This American Life episode, entitled 24 Hours at the Golden Apple.KagaTakeshi wrote:The "Golden = suck" rule does apply on almost all occasions, but I do think Golden Apple on Southport is the one exception. I was expecting a tasteless chicken breast but I thought the blackening spices would help. Nope. The whole thing was nasty and sadly, may have been the best looking breast in the house.
