Probably. All the fish & chips I've ever had looked similar to that. But the color profile! Beautiful!

Well, no, nothing "wrong" with them. There is nothing wrong with frozen pizza either, but I'd be mighty pissed if I was served a piping hot Tombstone at Nick and Vito's....

Sushi from Chen's Chinese & Sushi in Wrigleyville. I should have known better, but I had both a craving for sushi and some General's shrimp, and in the past I've enjoyed delivery of Ameri-Chinese classics from Chen's, so I went for it. Terrible decision. I've had better sushi from Jewel...yes I'll admit it, I occasionally can't help but pick up a package of super-market maki. The maki from Chen's was flavorless and the nigiri was low quality, but worst of all was the rice itself which was dense and really lacking vinegar. As for the General's shrimp, it was alright, but more and more I'm starting to put Ameri-Chinese food up near the top of my list of things I grew up really liking only to later realize I was just terribly naive.

The the 2 meat sampler at Q BBQ in LaGrange.
Brisket tasted like pot roast in bbq sauce and the smoked sausage was some crap with a little extra pepper in it.
Those stupid metal trays are a joke. They are way too big for the amount of food you get.
Im still in the learning stage on my smoker but the pork butt i made this past sunday and the carolina bbq i also made would have left "the best bbq in chicago"in the dust.
I had better BBq at a bait shop when i was down at Dale Hollow Reservoir Tennesee fishing in October.

Lucerne light yogurt. I made the mistake of buying a few different flavors b/c they were on sale at Dominick's. It doesn't even qualify as yogurt in my book - just artificially flavored, gloppy yuckiness. Why would anyone bother wasting even 90 calories on this stuff is beyond me.

I had a similar experience with Horizon brand chocolate milk:
    Image
I was thinking this might be something to take on a camping/
Burning Man trip where fresh dairy is difficult to store.
I had a UHT (ultra-high temp pasteurized) chocolate milk
before (in Bonaire, where fresh/refrig milk is rare)
that was very good, but this crap tastes like neither
milk nor chocolate - almost like Strawberry Quik in
    water or maybe left-over cereal-(soy)milk.
    Craptacular!

The Korean restaurant in the new French Market (NW train station)...4 people, 4 different lunches, 4 big thumbs DOWN.

The Mexican place is also not worth the wait (usually crowded for some reason).

Saigon Sisters has pretty decent sandwiches - serves Pho on Mon, Tue & Sat but haven't had a chance to try that yet.

The Tandoori Chicken sandwich from Cosi. I normally get the Sesame Ginger Chicken as a quick fix, but decided to branch out a bit. Bad move.
Part of that may stem from the fact that dijon mustard somehow found it's way onto the sandwich somewhere in it's creation, hopefully accidentally, creating a combination of flavors that was positively horrific. Either way, that was a godawful sandwich.

Nope roninhobbit, it found it's way into my tuna salad sandwich. I always have to say no sauce. Not to mention it wasn't really mustard, but goo like.

I have friends who are terribly dull in their food choices but haven't seen in months so we tried to find a place of somewhat mutual agreement. Since they didn't like any of my suggestions I caved in to theirs....Corner Bakery Cafe. My vegetarian partner was OK with this, they have salads that the meat can be removed from and they have pastas. I decided to go with a plain corned beef sandwich. The sandwich arrives buried under 4 large tomatoes and slices of curly lettuce which got removed immediately. Inside was about 3 pressed thin slices of "corned beef" and one slice of swiss cheese that had no taste. The bread was their house "baked" rye bread that totally fell apart as I started eating. I only ate about one half, eventually just picking up the meat and placing it on a broken bread chunk. This came with a small amount of their house chips, most of which were broken. No manager was around to show this mess but I think I left a pile of tomatoes, lettuce. broken bread bits and a half of sandwich that was bigger than the original! We did have a nice visit with our friends but never again to a place that is so jammed together and noisy. Our friends seemed happy though.

I was really looking forward to eating at Marigold. I had a groupon and I remembered how much I enjoyed it last time I was there. But the malai kofta was so disappointing. The sauce was really worse than what I make I home. The rest of the meal was good. Nothing to write home about, but good. Next time I want to eat similar Indian, I am heading to Veerasway.

White Castle sausage, cheese and egg breakfast sandwich.

Pretzel dredge salty, low-rent fried chicken greasy topped with volcanically hot gummy sticky cheese product that could easily sub for wall spackle. Pillow soft bun could not contain the molten mess, as evidenced by my shirt and steering wheel, and after the first bite I was immediately sorry I had bought two. Well cooked fluffy soft egg deserved better than its sandwich mates.

Weak watery coffee, lid designed by Rube Goldberg, added insult to injury.

Someone recently recommended the White Castle breakfast sandwich to me. Lucky for them I don't remember who.

My feeling is that restaurants with "Golden" in the title are bound to suck. Golden Flame, check. Golden Nugget, check. Haven't eaten at Golden Bear, but from what Mr. Pie's told me, it fits.

Unless it's 4am and you're wasted...then the "Golden%"* joints are lifesavers. When your belly's sloshing with booze and your taste buds are too drunk to know the difference, a big stack of Golden Apple's sponge-like pancakes, a few cups of bottomless coffee, and a coupla Advils can proactively take the edge off what would've otherwise been a gnarly hangover.

    * Yes, that's an Oracle SQL wildcard. Damn job stuff is seeping into my normal thoughts.

The "Golden = suck" rule does apply on almost all occasions, but I do think Golden Apple on Southport is the one exception. The service has always been friendly, the breakfast foods and diner staples are fresh, tasty and consistent as are the specials (every now and then an "ethnic" dish from one of the kitchen staff will creep onto the menu). They also have a huge advantage as one of the few reliable 24-hour joints in Chicago.

Blackend Chicken Sandwich from Hooters in Melrose Park.

I was expecting a tasteless chicken breast but I thought the blackening spices would help. Nope. The whole thing was nasty and sadly, may have been the best looking breast in the house.

That was a great episode where (among other things) the Golden Apple waitresses discovered that treating the customers rudely actually resulted in bigger tips.
