Thank you to Fishline for reviving this thread, so that I heard about Hashalom and got there before it closes... although now I join the group of mourners over its closing. We were exhausted yesterday and needed some good food in a relaxed atmosphere, and Hashalom was just the place. Mr H ordered the cornish hen -- see the photo above from 2007, it was just the same; and I had the lamb shank. All very delicious. Preceded by soup -- Moroccan vegetable for Mr H (with a very interesting spicy -- cinnamon? - unlike anything I have had, very good) and I had cabbage, also very good. Somehow a very comforting restaurant, which we would be adding to our regular rotation if only they were staying open!!! Numerous additional items to try on the menu! How can they close!!

We were there tonight. Our dear waitress told us they may close as early as March 18th so they can clean out the restaurant, so don't wait until the end of March to make your last visit.

    Aimee --

Thank you for sharing your memories and experiences. They ring so true - how many of us end up cherishing what we thought was torturous to us as moody teenagers.

how many people may have had a terrible day, gotten the worst news of their lives, or the best, and came to hashalom for a celebration or solace because it's worn and familiar, or just a damn good, cheap meal.
What a great line about Ha'Shalom - really captures it's essence - see my earlier post about just such an experience.

What a loss this is. I can't think of another restaurant I would feel this sad about if it closed. Manny's maybe, it is a treasure, but in such a different way than Ha'Shalom.

Boy, I'll miss the braised lamb shank. I'll try to get in one or two last times.

Take care, my best to you and your family.

Thanks Eva for reminding me about this--I've never been and would really like to try it before they're gone. I'm going to post something on the event page and see if anyone would like to join me (this is not a place that picky SO would probably do...)

Just returned from what probably is our last meal  at HaShalom--delicious as ever. They were doing very good business too in their waning days. The restaurant is probably closing on Sunday according to Aimee (see above). The only good news is that her mother is considering writing a cookbook that I dearly hope includes her wonderful Moroccan vegetable soup. News will be posted to their Facebook page.

I was there last night, too, and feeling pretty bittersweet about the whole thing. (To the point that I was tearing up when I called my mom to give he the news - she didn't believe me.) It was like being in the middle of a big family gathering; the hugs, the kibitzing, the people getting up to go to the kitchen and get themselves some extra plates (everyone knew Aimee was slammed because they were so busy - I've never seen them that busy on a weeknight). And oh, the Moroccan eggplant! I can't believe that was probably the last time I'll ever eat that there...maybe I'll squeeze another visit in over the weekend...even if I am still feeling the garlic after brushing my teeth.

thank you, as always, for being patient with me last night!! it was unexpectedly busy and, well, i'm just not as good as i once was!! being away from serving tables for a year makes it quite difficult to get back into the rhythm of things, but i am looking forward to round two tonight, with a little help from my friends ;)
    best,

Aimee--not sure if you got my message last night but EvA said you might be closing this Sunday--our group was planning to come in next Thursday, the 25th so hoping that's a misunderstanding. Could you let me know? Thanks so much--and hoping we get to meet in person :)
