    LTH-North Lunch

    Isaac & Moishe's Deli, Fruits & Vegetables
    311 Waukegan Ave
    Highwood, IL 60040
    847 433-0557

    April 6th @ 11:30 am

There is always so much I want to try, though by myself or one other limits any opportunity to explore the menu. I thought with a few LTHforum friends to spread the joy, I can try much more. For more information on what to expect, check this thread on Isaac and Moishe's Deli.

I cannot leave without one of these 'quesadilla papa sazonada:'

    Cathy-
I just got back from spring break in Mexico, so I have to keep the theme (albeit now porkless) going. I will be there.

    thanks, Will

I'd like to join you all for this lunch, but I have to be somewhere else at that time. Hope you'll let me know when and where the next get-together will be.

That quesadilla papa sazonada DOES look terrific!

I would love to join you, but I'm not sure if my current project will allow me to take off for Highwood that early in the day. I will try, but please don't wait if I'm not there at 11:30.

BTW, does anyone know if this soup is still on the menu?
    From ronnie suburban:
    Huashmole
This hearty and tasty soup is made in a blender by combining the raw guaje seeds with tomatillos, epazote and cilantro. After it's blended and while it's simmering, beef shanks are added. Once plated (or bowled), fresh lime juice and chunks of avocado are added.

    Hi,

It would be great to see you.

The Mexican homestyle food varies from day to day with only a few menu items like my pictured quesadilla. I think this dish you referred to was a few months ago. Not known what we may expect tomorrow.

Pretty sure it's a seasonal thing (and it's already been a few months since I had it) but that's only a guess.

Yesterday's lunch was great. Great food and company. It put me in such a good mood that I went over to the Secretary of State's office after lunch and renewed my drivers license.

I'm sure Ronnie will post his photos and descriptions shortly - including his discovery of an actual pay telephone! :D

Looking forward to the next LTH-North event.

Thanks, to Cathy, for organizing this one. It was a fun get-together and the food -- served personally in waves by Isaac and Moishe -- was excellent . . .

    Quesadillas de Papa

    Image
    Quesadilla de Papa
Fantastic, ultra-crisp and light shell filled with delicious potato filling and accented with a generous crumble of pungent cotija cheese. These were spectacular.

    Image
Costillas de Res in Adobo Sauce
Prepared by Moishe's wife Lidia, these delectable short ribs were tender but not mushy and cooked/smothered in a delicious, addictive and complex adobo sauce.

    Image
    Barbacoa
The redder meat on the left is goat. The browner meat on the right is beef. Both were very tasty and nicely tender.

    Atomic Cake
I didn't try this but others who did can comment on it.

    Pay Phone
The first non-airport payphone I remember seeing in a long time.

This was a great lunch, which really highlighted what the deli does best. Not pictured are 3 salsas (red, green and arbol), which complemented the meal very nicely. Rice and beans, also not pictured were delicious and transcended the perfunctory versions that are served in a lot of restaurants. I enjoyed everything I ate and would be hard-pressed to choose a favorite. In many ways, the deli has supplanted the restaurant for me because the offerings are funkier and much more soulful. Before tip, our entire lunch for 6 people came in at $54, so it's a real bargain, too.

Let me add my comments too. I was one of the six last week at I&M's deli. It was sooooo good. I'm not an expert on Mexican food but Lidia's home cooking is just great.
