Thanks, to Cathy, for organizing this one. It was a fun get-together and the food -- served personally in waves by Isaac and Moishe -- was excellent . . .
TamalesRajas, and chicken in both red and green salsas
Tamal de Rajas
Quesadillas de Papa
Quesadilla de PapaFantastic, ultra-crisp and light shell filled with delicious potato filling and accented with a generous crumble of pungent cotija cheese. These were spectacular.
Costillas de Res in Adobo SaucePrepared by Moishe's wife Lidia, these delectable short ribs were tender but not mushy and cooked/smothered in a delicious, addictive and complex adobo sauce.
BarbacoaThe redder meat on the left is goat. The browner meat on the right is beef. Both were very tasty and nicely tender.
Atomic CakeI didn't try this but others who did can comment on it.
Pay PhoneThe first non-airport payphone I remember seeing in a long time.
This was a great lunch, which really highlighted what the deli does best. Not pictured are 3 salsas (red, green and arbol), which complemented the meal very nicely. Rice and beans, also not pictured were delicious and transcended the perfunctory versions that are served in a lot of restaurants. I enjoyed everything I ate and would be hard-pressed to choose a favorite. In many ways, the deli has supplanted the restaurant for me because the offerings are funkier and much more soulful. Before tip, our entire lunch for 6 people came in at $54, so it's a real bargain, too.
