They closed a while back (maybe a year), right about the time Mayfair Market opened on Pulaski between Lawrence and Leland. Not sure if the two were connected.

A new Mexican/taco place called Taco Fuego just opened on Belmont (1648 W. Belmont) next to Late Night Thai. I haven't tried it yet, but the menu looks a little more interesting than the standard taco/burrito place.

There also a new oven-fired pizza place about a block west on Belmont that claims to have opened this weekend - I forget the name, though.

And sorry if this was in the last thread, but the Japanese/sushi restaurant Matsuyama at 1059 W. Belmont is closed now.

"Coming soon" at 5648 West Diversey: "Istanbul Fast Food".

No idea whether it'll just be a gyro/burger joint or something more interesting, or whether it'll ever actually open.

The short-lived Paris Café at Clark & Chicago is now Chicago Bar & Grill. Yesterday's specials were $5 martinis & "free food with any drink". Unlike Paris Café, it had a handful of customers in it yesterday evening.

Potential good news for those of us in Skokie who miss Kabul House!

Signs posted at the old Billy's Sandwich Shop, intersection of Niles Ave. and Oakton Street in Skokie, are now indicating that ...

    Kabul House, coming soon!

Although I remain skeptical, and although the last comment in the Kabul House thread suggested their new location was having problems with volume, I'd welcome them back in a "New York Minute," especially if they are still BYO.

Thank you for taking the time to contact Baja Fresh. The Baja Fresh restaurants you are inquiring about are no longer members of our franchise community. At Baja Fresh we take guest satisfaction very seriously, and unfortunately there were a number of operational and financial issues that led us to terminate our relationship with our Illinois franchisee and close all Baja Fresh restaurants in the Illinois Market. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our loyal Baja Fresh Customers. There are no immediate plans to open another restaurant in this area; however Baja Fresh currently has 254 restaurants in 20 states and is continuously growing in its number of locations.

Is it certainly operating as Baja Fresh?

Also per that Cheap Date blog,

This past Saturday (May 1) we visited our local Baja Fresh restaurant in Rolling Meadows, only to find the signage had been changed to read "Pacifica Mexican Grill."

When we asked the guy at the register what was going on, he indicated that the name had changed that day, and that was about all the information he had. We got the impression that he was probably just as surprised as we were. The Pacifica Mexican Grill menu is basically the same, albeit stripped down a bit. All the "Baja Fresh" trappings-- cups, plates, etc.-- were replaced with generic ones.

That's a pretty accurate description of that location (the only Baja I'm familiar with).

Is the Phoenix Inn finally re-opening? On the southwest corner, The Fire Rock Hookah Cafe (groan)
On the northeast corner -- two doors down from Theatre Cafe -- is La Pane Bakery (which is advertising "pastries and pizzas")

Still anxiously awaiting what "pub with outdoor patio" is gonna be on the northwest corner, in the old liquor store.

Living about 75 yards away, I've been awfully impressed with the turnaround on the facade of that building, which quickly turned from one of the worst eyesores in the 'hood into a pleasant-looking space. I’ll patronize the place even if it stinks, just to thank them for cleaning up so many years of dreck.

Noodles and Company opening in the old Pompei Bakery‎ Space at Harlem and Lake

    7215 Lake St, River Forest

Wednesday Home Journal wrote:3/16/2010 10:00:00 PM

From Pompei to Noodles & Company

A new restaurant is slated to open in early May at the corner of Lake and Harlem, filling a storefront in the River Forest Town Center that has sat vacant since December.

Noodles & Company, a national chain specializing in pasta dishes with Asian, Mediterranean and American flavors, may open in early May at 7215 Lake, according to Steve Gutierrez, village administrator in River Forest.

Municipal officials are already processing paperwork for the new business, and renovations at the site are ongoing. The restaurant's Web site states it will be opening soon in River Forest, but does not offer a timeline.

A call to Mid-America, the leasing agent for the property, was not immediately returned.

The address is the former home of Pompei, a small Chicago chain of Italian restaurants that closed somewhat unexpectedly in December.

That business made a splash just prior to its closing when the manager was arrested for allegedly stealing several thousand dollars from the restaurant.

I hear ya -- I've been working down the street for nearly 5 yrs, and it's been that awful for at least that long. I just hope the facade is as nice as the actual structure, which, I imagine, needed some major help.
