Hi- I have to go to Malcolm X College this Saturday 5/8. I am going to be there from 8:00am-5:00pm, with an hour off for lunch. Are there are restaurants in the area that you would recommend? I would prefer something within walking distance, although I will have a car. Thanks, Nancy

Bombon Cafe, for excellent tortas. It's about half a mile northeast (up Ogden), on the corner of Monroe and Ashland.

You could go another block to Madison and have a cheeseboiger at Billy Goat's Tavern. Or turn right onto Madison, go three blocks to Palace Grill, one of the best diners in town.

    Moon's Sandwich Shop
    16 S. Western Ave.

Great corned beef sandwiches and diner fare.

I like Moon's too. But I would use the car...

I second the motion for Bom Bon. They have great soups (if they have posole get it, you will be in heaven). As of today they seem to ramping up their daily specials. I called today hoping to go there for lunch but timing threw me off but they informed me proudly that they had three lunch specials. Maybe this had something to do with Cinco de Mayo . . .

I am quite fond of their Sope plate. And their desserts are so amazing. I encourage you to try any of the Tres Leches options but the other slices and tarts are exciting too.

I also think Bom bon is a great choice; you can walk it in five minutes from Malcolm X. Additionally, Breakfast Club, Oggi Cafe, Coalfire and Twisted Spoke are a five minute drive away in the Grand and Ogden vicinity; most should have you in and out in under an hour.

Hi- Thanks for all the suggestions. I ended up going to Bombon. I decided that it was too far to walk there, so I drove there, and spend a dollar on parking. I am surprised that there are so few restaurants within walking distance of the college. The only place close I saw was Church's Chicken, and I did not want to go there. People were told to go to Greektown or Roosevelt for lunch.

Bombon was good, but I thought it was a little expensive. Everything was more expensive than the prices posted on their website. I had a grilled vegetable sandwich, which came with a small handful of barbecue potato chips, and was $8.95. I had a 12 oz. coffee with that, which was $2.25, which I thought was kind of expensive for good, but not great coffee.

They were really quick to bring my sandwich, but it took me a while to give them my order. They only had one person taking orders, and she was also manning the take out bakery. The baked goods did look really good. Hope this helps, Nancy

Agreed. They are a little pricey but the quality is very good. I think their coffee (Illy) is fantastic and have never had a bad cup, although given its size its also fairly expensive. I work a few blocks away but rarely go due to price and quantity of food.

If you're driving anyway I'm surprised that Taylor Street wasn't suggested. Parking on the western end (Ferrara's, Baci, Granddaddy's, Savioe) is pretty easy & its a lot closer than Greektown.

Maybe because it was Saturday? Some of the Tri-Taylor places are open only for weekday lunch. (Or, maybe they're just clueless about what's nearby. :) )

Nancy, I'm glad you enjoyed Bombon.
