Hi- I was just in the Whole Foods in downtown Evanston, and they have some really good sales on right now. They have quart containers of Santa Cruz organic lemonade on sale for $1! It is normally $2.99. I believe it is on sale through next Tuesday 6/22. They also have beef rib eye steak on sale 6/18-6/20 for $9.99/lb. It is normally $14.99/lb, and they have Keta salmon on sale from 6/18-6/20 for $8.99/lb. It is normally $11.99/lb. Today only, 6/18, they also have conventional sweet cherries on sale for $1.99/lb. I bought a quart of the lemonade because it was such a good deal. I also bought 2 loafs of Earthgrain bread, which they had buy 1 get 1 free.
I am out of the Italian garlic that I bought in November from Nichols at the Evanston market. They have the best garlic. I was forced to buy garlic from Whole Foods today, and all they had was organic garlic from Mexico. I usually avoid buying anything from Mexico, because I worry how clean it is.
I passed on the cherries, even though they were a good deal, because they were Western cherries. Very few grocery stores carry local cherries. Meijers might carry local cherries, but Dominick's and Jewel never do. I do not know about places like Fresh Fields. I suspect that they only carry Western cherries. I have heard that there are too many cherry trees planted in California and Washington, so they flood the market here. My sister with the farm in Michigan, told me a few years ago, that 75% of the cherries they picked on their farm, were being sold to people that sell at the Chicago area farmer's market. A lot of their wholesale customers, raise cherries themselves, but do not raise enough cherries to sell at the farmer's market on a regular basis. Hope this helps, Nancy
