Hi- I was just in the Whole Foods in downtown Evanston, and they have some really good sales on right now. They have quart containers of Santa Cruz organic lemonade on sale for $1! It is normally $2.99. I believe it is on sale through next Tuesday 6/22. They also have beef rib eye steak on sale 6/18-6/20 for $9.99/lb. It is normally $14.99/lb, and they have Keta salmon on sale from 6/18-6/20 for $8.99/lb. It is normally $11.99/lb. Today only, 6/18, they also have conventional sweet cherries on sale for $1.99/lb. I bought a quart of the lemonade because it was such a good deal. I also bought 2 loafs of Earthgrain bread, which they had buy 1 get 1 free.

I am out of the Italian garlic that I bought in November from Nichols at the Evanston market. They have the best garlic. I was forced to buy garlic from Whole Foods today, and all they had was organic garlic from Mexico. I usually avoid buying anything from Mexico, because I worry how clean it is.

I passed on the cherries, even though they were a good deal, because they were Western cherries. Very few grocery stores carry local cherries. Meijers might carry local cherries, but Dominick's and Jewel never do. I do not know about places like Fresh Fields. I suspect that they only carry Western cherries. I have heard that there are too many cherry trees planted in California and Washington, so they flood the market here. My sister with the farm in Michigan, told me a few years ago, that 75% of the cherries they picked on their farm, were being sold to people that sell at the Chicago area farmer's market. A lot of their wholesale customers, raise cherries themselves, but do not raise enough cherries to sell at the farmer's market on a regular basis. Hope this helps, Nancy

Editing snarky response which was too easy, to instead point out politely that all garlic, Mexican and otherwise, is grown in dirt. I'll also politely and snarklessly add that I have eaten quite a bit of Mexico-grown produce with no ill effects, and will (again non snarkily) wonder aloud why Nancy feels the way she does, though she is of course more than entitled to her views about this matter and all others. I'd also like to wish everyone a pleasant, snark-free weekend.

I was tempted to head in to WF and pick up some king crab legs on sale for $12.99/lb, but decided the $50+ I would have spent there on a couple items would be better spent filling up my cart @ Brookhaven last night.

Hi- The reason I buy very little produce from Mexico, is because I try to eat food from local sources as much as possible, and I know that there are some pesticides such as DDT, which are banned in this country, but are allowed in Mexico. Only a small percentage of the produce that comes from Mexico is inspected at the border. I know that legally they are not supposed to bring any produce to this country from Mexico, that has been sprayed with any pesticide that is illegal to use in this country, but it just too easy for that stuff to slip through the border. Hope this helps, Nancy

All I can add is that whenever I'm in Mexico, I'm guessing pretty much every place I eat serves Mexico-grown produce. And I've been eating it for many, many years with no ill effects (and maybe I'm tempting fate by saying this).

Hi- My parents did a bus tour of Mexico once, and everybody on the bus, except for one person got sick. The one woman that did not get sick, eat everything in site, and always drank the tap water. My parents were careful about what they eat, and they still got sick. There were only two cities that they visited, where they were told it was safe to drink the tap water. I think the food is safer in touristy places such as Cancun and Acapulco. Hope this helps, Nancy

I'm not so sure about that. It seems to have shriveled your snark glands. :(

Kinda like viagra was first used s a heart medicine, DDT was first used as a desnarkifying drug. Later, it was discovered that ahpids were killed by using ddt.

Is the season for king crab over already? If so, I'm guessing the legs at WF are frozen or previously frozen? Not that I've had enough king crab to be able to tell between fresh and defrosted, just wondering what your opinion is.

frozen for sure. actually not a bad price for WF. If I am buying crab legs I prefer them to be frozen vs the store defrosting them.

I have had fresh, live king crab once in my life(Bob Chinns), the rest has been frozen legs & claws.

Actually, it is only banned completely in the United States and some other countries. It is still used overseas for human health reasons and some agricultural applications.

Whole Foods crab legs were frozen. I thought about buying some also. They put them on sale every few months.

It is very difficult to find never-frozen king crab legs. I had them last year at Joe's Stone Crab, mainly because the waiter emphasized how short the season is to have never-frozen legs. They were the best I can recall having.
