For good Thai, try Siam's House or for a good Polish buffet you can try Lone Tree Manor.

Siam's House has a nice lunch buffet (Monday thru Friday) featuring fried spring rolls, basil chicken, pad see ewe, pad thai, a stir fried vegetable/tofu mix and fried rice. However, they can be very slow to refill the buffet.

Lone Tree has great home made soups and a nice variety of items on the buffet including very good potato pancakes and blintzes. There are different specials on the buffet daily.

I second the Siam's House recommendation except for the best of what they offer, I'd suggest skipping the buffet and ordering off the menu or the blackboard specials.

If you like Sushi, I have really been digging
    Makisu Sushi Lounge
in the corner shopping center next to Corner Bakery

They have excellent and cheap lunch box specials,
and they food is so beautifully presented in addition to being delicious and reasonble,
It's really like getting a little work of art for lunch.

Their drinks look yummy too, but I have not been able to sample them as I always have to go back to work...drats.

I second this recommendation! The chicken vender (toreoro sp?) to the left when you first walk in has spectacular korean fried chicken. A little pricey, but highly recommended!

Best cheddarburger in the world at Paradise Pup in Des Plaines. Great shakes and dogs, too.

Best steak tacos at Las Asadas in Des Plaines, about one mile north of Paradise Pup.

While not technically Niles, these are must-eats if you're in the general area.

    Hi,

There is also a wait because the chicken is made to order.

If your timing is right, you can stroll all the tasting stations before heading back for dinner.

No. H Mart is a giant Asian supermarket with an emphasis on Korean goods. It's the size of 3 Jewels. Great produce, fish & meat. House make kimchee, house made tofu, house extracted sesame oil and the aforementioned food court and other concessions located around the perimeter of the store (of which the chicken place is but one)..

Not really. It's a giant Korean supermarket but doesn't have non food items, except that there are some small seperate stores/booths selling stuff around the perimeter of the larger store.

This is great...I went to a Korean market in Chicago, and was totally lost. Any outstanding things for me to buy and try at H Mart? By the way, this is going to be a Korean day for me. I'm planning to go to the King Spa...the article in the Tribune totally sold me.

Kitty corner from HMart is the Village Creamery, a locally owned ice cream shop that has some very way out flavors
You can see the flavor list here:

    They are very tropical-unusual-delicious-
bring a cooler and get some dry ice and you're set!

Um, actually, that's not so. While I agree that their selection of non-food items is small, it does exist (or at least it did on our last visit there). I think the point is correct though: one visits H Mart to do one's food shopping, not to shop as one might at a "regular" grocery store.

My comment was in comparison to the types of things you find in Walmart - clothing, bicycles, toys, auto parts, hardware, TVs, fishing rods, lamps, etc.etc., not what a Jewel might carry in non food.

The "New" #6 sweet / spicy kicked our butts today. The counter lady said it was way too hot for her, but I kinda thought she may have been a wimp. Nope. I loved it. We got some sushi from the sushi place figuring rice would cut the heat if needed, but what happened was, we ordered four spicy tuna hand rolls, and they were far too sugary for our palates. Kinda miffed at that one. Spicy tuna rolls- full of sweet sauce. So we couldn't even eat the rolls, they were gross. The sides that came with the chicken were pretty gross too - shredded cabbage with thousand island, and some kind of sweet/sour pickled vegetable cube. So, we basically sweated through it all. I don't think I'd eat it plain with no sides again, but a cooling side would be awesome with this stuff.
Great call. This is really good chicken!

FWIW-While living in the area 10 years ago, I remember China Star providing extremely fast pick up(10 mins) and dirt cheap lunch specials even for a Chinese Restaurant. While I couldn't find an official website menu, a google search produced a site with a menu scan(accuracy and date posted unknown) pricing 29 lunch specials including chicken fried rice and eggroll from $3.95-$4.25 and a few priced at $5.25. As for quality, I felt most of the dishes were mediocre at best. The lunch special, lack of many other walkable options, and my overall laziness contributed to settling on China Star for a meal. My usual order was the pancit guisado(no fried rice), lo mein(no fried rice), or General Tsao's chicken which were all tasty but nothing "revolutionary." I also liked that they offered their lunch specials on Saturday.

Thanks for all the info. everyone. My sister and I experienced the King Spa last Friday. What an awesome cultural experience. If you want more info. PM me. The spa experience is (or can be) a long one. So we opted to eat in the King Spa cafe. I opted for the seafood pancake (very heavy and greasy), and my sister opted for a beef dish. Both were way too big in portions, and you can't really save it to take home for later. Most of the clientele were Korean, and they were slurping some nice looking soups. If/when I go back; I'd try one of those. They also have some nice smoothies. I got a Kiwi smoothie...very nice.

I did get to H Mart. I could have spent a lot more time there as there was just so much to see. It was interesting to see that they had a guy on a bullhorn hawking various produce in what I assume was the Korean language. Took a look at the fresh fish...the giant head carp was scary looking. Ate a few samples, picked up tofu (no idea what to do with it yet), frozen dumplings, Korean pancake (dessert), Asian snacks (no idea what they are), chicken on a stick, and a few other misc. items. Enough to make me wonder when I got home what the heck was I thinking! But I will figure it all out.

About the Korean Chicken recommendation. I got a box of spicy and sweet chicken to go (for my son). He liked it, but I wasn't so impressed. Maybe it lost something in the translation after a one hour trip home. I forget how many pieces were in a box...14...16, anyway all I can say is that these people cut up chicken way different than most. There were no legs or thighs, lots of wings, rib pieces cut in several pieces, and the breast meat was again cut into several chunks (and was rather dry). The chicken was battered and fried, and then coated with a very gloppy sauce. The sauce had a nice taste, but on the whole I wouldn't order it again. What I really liked was one of the perimeter stalls that sold these tiny walnut shaped cakes with sweet red bean paste and a walnut inside. I'll be buying a lot more of those things on my next visit.

Anyway, thanks for all the recommendations. I'll look them all over again on my next visit to the Niles area!

Has anyone else been to the restaurant inside King Spa? I usually spend a lot of time at Paradise Sauna during the winter holidays, but a friend told me that King is like Disneyland in comparison, so it seems worth the haul out to Niles in the next week or two. I'm just wondering whether I should stick around for lunch or a late dinner or get fully dressed and eat next door at H-Mart.

    Hi,

In the same building as H-Mart on the west side is a Korean restaurant, which I believe offers BBQ. If I eat there, I do tend to go to H-Mart's food court and mostly to the dumpling stand. Has anyone been to the Korean restaurant?
