Basil Haydens may be the business traveler's best friend. It frequently shows up on receipts as "Basil H" or "Basil"...which is about as innocuous as drinks get for the expense report.

    :D

I would be pretty dangerous with an expense account.

Hoping the place I am going to for dinner tonight has some Basil on hand, or maybe even some Pappy.

Also, if you don't mind sharing, where did you find the Dirler Kessler Riesling? I've had it in restaurants in Alsace but haven't seen it in the US.

I believe I have peaked early in my beer career: yesterday at Great Taste of the Midwest, I had the opportunity to "double-fist" Sam Adams Utopias and GI's Bourbon County Vanilla Bean. The latter I have had before. The Utopias was a revelation--damn good, but really not quite beer anymore. It tastes quite like a port or sherry. No head, syrupy consistency, not too sweet. Given the volume of it that my party and I drank in total, I think we saved around the cost of our tickets

The Utopias was admittedly quite nice, and on principle it was my "favorite" beer of the weekend. I think my real favorite, however, was a wild golden ale from New Glarus. We stopped on our way back into the city, and this was revelatory: the closest thing I've ever had to Orval, and perhaps even better. Less ruby and more golden, but equally floral and with a more pronounced brett-funkiness, this would rank among my all-time faves, except it was only a 160 bbl batch that will probably never be made again :(

Has there ever been a dedicated LTH beer event? A sort of "Open That Bottle Day" for beer, perhaps?

    Well, not currently drinking but...

Left a newly opened bottle of Highland Park 18-year single malt at our summer cabin last week and I'm seriously missing it. It's singlehandedly redefined my opinion of single malts.

The upside? I'm headed to the cabin in about 5 hours...

Revolution has their collaboration with Three Floyds on tap right now. It's two beers -- a Russian Imperial Stout called Sodom (11% ABV) and a small beer made from second runnings and dry hopped, called Gomorrah.

Sodom tapped on Wednesday and they don't have a lot of it, so if you want to try it you better hurry in. In my mind it was comparable to some of the better Dark Lord vintages -- it's excellent. You can do a 5oz sample of Sodom for $4, snifters are $9. Interesting to do a side-by-side with the small beer made from the same batch.

Apparently they also put some in barrels for aging. Looking forward to that down the road. Three Floyds also got some kegs of it, so those closer to there can watch for it to show up in their pub.

I had a growler of the Gomorrah about a week ago. At 3.4% ABV, it's got tons of flavor, and you can drink it all night long.

Had both at the Great Taste in Madison this past weekend. Excellent beers. I really like the Gomorrah as a small beer. Tons of flavor and only 3.4% abv. Hopefully that Barrel Aged Soddom will be at FOBAB this November.

Small beers are definitely short on appreciation. Good to see this one getting some love. I missed it at Great Taste, being busy with Short's/Kuhnhenn/Utopias/Real Ale Tent.

Short's and Kuhnhenn were both a couple of my favorites last weekend. Tyranena brought their A game as well. Brugge from Indianapolis had an excellent sour called Pooka.

yep. the Sodom was definetely a meal in itself, but the Gomorrah, though dark as night, was as you mentioned, light and full of flavor. i was really impressed with it. finished off the afternoon with a few LaPhroaigs

Haven't had it, but for cheaper and more likely to be fresh hefeweizen I like to go with Sierra Nevada Kellerweis. One of the best American hefe's out there imo.
