Just sitting here and reminiscing about the good ol days when i used to walk over to Aldo's Subs on Grand Ave (5500W 2 blocks west of Central Ave) and order the best Italian Sub i have ever eaten. I was privileged to live just a block away from this place and enjoy them the first 20 years of my life, before they closed down due to family issues i believe.

Does anyone else remember this place? I have had Subs all over Chicago including the Alpine sub shop, but nothing has yet to compare to Aldo's. The magic that was Aldo's was the homemade italian dressing they used which stands out among every other place I've been to. They kept it in squeezable ketchup bottles and shook up the oil/vinegar for each sub and drenched the sandwich with all it's glory. Not to mention the fresh deli meats carved on-site, the fresh bread delivered daily, and the large portions. While Alpine comes the closest to matching what Aldo's had, the Italian dressing sets them apart.

Is there such a place that still exists?

By the time I heard about Aldo's, it was closed, unfortunately. Alpine, even as the sandwiches got skimpier, remained my area sub place. No longer. Frank's Deli at Thatcher (8000W) and Lake in River Forest gets my biz now. It is operated by, and is next to Bertolli's Pizza, which has been my area pizza choice for years. The sandwiches are made to order. They'll add whatever you want to the usual standard menu items. I like to add prosciuto (sp.) to the basic Italian. Very good. And, very ample servings of meats and cheeses.

West of Bari, I'm still a big Alpine fan (have to make them DRENCH it with oil,) and their potato salad is one of the few examples of an actually edible storebought product I can think of.

    HOWEVER -

You both might want to check into Al & Joe's if you like sammiches stacked high with meat.
I've been meaning to check out Frank's for quite a while.
We cannot be friends if you do not know the difference between Mayo and Miracle Whip.

I was a fan of Aldo's subs and also their Italian beef. There's a short thread on Aldo's here.

Yes, I started that thread. Really didn't get any traction at all.

Needless to say, yes I remember Aldo's. I've now become a fan of Al & Joe's. But, while good, just isn't the same.
