I need help...does anyone here remember the all-time greatest Gyros sandwich ever created? I'm speaking, of course, of the small, family-owned joint on the west-side of Broadway. A couple two-tree blocks south of Belmont and a couple two-tree north of Barry. You'd climb the few steps to enter, the Gyros spit is on the right...6 or 8 laminated tables...a small TV hanging from the far wall...the all-time most adorable sweet-hearted teenager manning the register.

Oh man the Gyros...I won't go into detail since anyone who knows what I'm talking about (if anyone) needs no descriptors...just the best ever.

I'd get my fix 2-3 times per week during the early to mid 1990's, then moved from the neighborhood. Went back for my injection a year or two ago and my beloved is GONE!

You must understand, this Gyros on Pita, to this day, is my single favorite food-craving ever. EVER! Of course, I've tried pretty much every Gyros in the city...nothing even comes close. The Chase of the Dragon led me to post here after all these years...

My family enjoys top-shelf food, and they have $. I dine probably 12-15 times per year at Les Nomades, Spiaggia, Naha, MK, Nomi, etc...But my favorite is that Broadway Gyro! CRAVINGS!!!

If anyone can provide any info (maybe they moved years ago?) I would be grateful

Uh, Barry is 3100 north, one block south of Belmont, so 2-3 blocks south of Belmont and 2-3 blocks north of Barry is not possible. I do remember a spot around Barry and Broadway, blue sign, can't remember the name. But mostly in the day I frequented Sparta Gyros just north of Belmont, but I remember the one you're talking about. Sparta Gyros for a gyros and then the liquor store just south of Belmont for $.99 quarts of Blatz. Back in the Days of Extreme Post College Poverty.

Gyros on the Spit, at 3138 N Broadway, was one of my all-time favorite Chicago restaurants for home-style Greek food. I still miss it. All I can do is suggest Central Gyros. It’s okay but not the same as "Spit on the Gyros."

    Edited to correct address.

Thanks Rene G...North of Dominick's but south of the Broadway Theatre? Sorry about my geography it's been about 15 years...I do indeed think I remember a blue sign though...still anyone have any info on if they're still in business in the city?

I used to stop there anytime I was in the area. That place had killer Greek food. I think they had the best pastitsio I've ever had. And their avgolemono was fantastic. The prices were quite reasonable too. I miss that place.

The family retired, the kids did not want to keep the businesss going. They had the best giant lima's around. The steam table in the window was awesome! Remember going to the restroom and seeing Dad in the little kitchen making his own gyro cone. This was a gem!! Good ole Gyro's on A Spit!!

We basically lived above this place from 1992-1994. The restaurant had a "real" name, but everyone I knew simply referred to it as "George's", the name of the squat, white haired, Greek gentleman that ran the place. I have to agree that this place turned out the best gyros I've ever had. The lemon chicken and potato wedges from the steam table were also amazing. I think they shut down in 1995, a victim of rapidly rising rents and a reluctance on the part of the kids to take over the business. I too, miss that place.

Back when I lived in the neighborhood, I would go there as well. When the Chow Poodle was sick, I'd briong her some of their Greek Style Green Beans. I used to tell her they were made by her Grandmother (who had passed away a couple of years prior). It always put a smile on her face and made her feel better.

Had our first Geeros there on the night of 28 September 1973. Fifth anniversary, yes I'm cheap.

Fell in love with all the food, and would dine there about once a week. We would bring our 3 year old, but had to stop at the Micky D, a few doors south, for a happy meal for her to eat. The owners of Gyros on a Spit, a very nice family understood, and would give her a green frog for her desert.

We moved, and we not able to go as often as we wanted, and lost touch with the owners. But my daughter, then 23 moved into her own place on Eddy, and the first place she went to eat, was there. When my kid told the mother, she began to cry a little, and said that she remembered us.
