    Shoot...

(I Already hit Fat Johnnies for the Mother n Law, polish, dog etc. My god is that place good and cheap. It's almost funny how cheap it is.)

I'm down here daily from 9-5 and do a lot of driving - out and about all day.

Thanks for all the suggestions you LTHers always pull through in a big way

    Dave

Slim pickings I'm afraid. Head south to Beverly area or west.

GNR Top Notch isn't too far, and Jimmy Jamm, too. I've never been to Jimmy Jamm, but have heard good things, so long as you like sweet potato pie and other variations on that theme. Top Notch is epic in its burger-iffic goodness. Driving's not terrible down there, but parking can be a bit annoying on 95th. Hopefully it's not too far out of the way.

If you're lucky, Rosangela's Pizza might deliver around there...but I'm not quite sure. Worth a shot, though.

In another direction, Lem's is right down 75th, just over two miles east.

Is Lagniappe still functioning down there? (I haven't been in sometime, obviously). If so, it's certainly worth a try, and you're only a couple of blocks away:

There are a couple of very good soul food places down there.

Turner's Family Restaurant (aka Mrs. Johnson's) was an LTH favorite a number of years ago that seems to have slipped off the radar. Wonderful sweet potatoes, collards, fried chicken, smothered chicken, and house made chicken and dumplings.

A couple of blocks north of there is Morrison's Soul Food (not to be confused with the chain of cafeterias). It is a neighborhood favorite.

There is also a BJ's at 79th and Racine if you're in the mood for some catfish.

Yes indeed, plenty of good food in the immediate area. With the closings of Doggie's and Edna's, one could make the case that Turner's and Morrison's are serving some of Chicago's best soul food. Here's a stuffed pepper I had at Morrison's a couple days ago.

Morrison's is cafeteria style but Turner's, a couple blocks south, has table service (and probably better food). Chicken and dumplings and smothered pork chops are especially recommended. Be warned that certain dishes can take a while to prepare.

Yes, Lagniappe is still open. Here's Mary's chicken creole from earlier this year. Service can be really slow.

I've only been to the original BJ's Market on Stony but I doubt the 79th Street branch is much different. Pretty solid food but the mustard-breaded catfish is clearly the star.

And that stretch of Ashland has perhaps the highest density of Harold's Chicken Shacks of any street in the city. If you can't make it out one day, maybe you could have the chickenmobile deliver your lunch.
