Yes indeed, plenty of good food in the immediate area. With the closings of Doggie's and Edna's, one could make the case that Turner's and Morrison's are serving some of Chicago's best soul food. Here's a stuffed pepper I had at Morrison's a couple days ago.

Morrison's is cafeteria style but Turner's, a couple blocks south, has table service (and probably better food). Chicken and dumplings and smothered pork chops are especially recommended. Be warned that certain dishes can take a while to prepare.

I've only been to the original BJ's Market on Stony but I doubt the 79th Street branch is much different. Pretty solid food but the mustard-breaded catfish is clearly the star.

And that stretch of Ashland has perhaps the highest density of Harold's Chicken Shacks of any street in the city. If you can't make it out one day, maybe you could have the chickenmobile deliver your lunch.
