Chowhound LA can be a bit of a drag to sift through, but I don't think you're going to get any of the luminaries to defect to a new board... It would also be perceived as further antagonizing of the big dog. Whether that would be a further motivation or not is left an exercise to the reader.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I didn't think Tony was looking to start a chowhound replacement, but rather to find a community of like-minded eaters in LA that use a message board that is somewhat easier to search than CH. That said, beween Erik M's posts here and Jonathan Gold's articles you could eat very well in LA for a long while. I wonder if Gold has a little comments forum on his articles - that could be fertile ground for an LA fressers community.

When I last went to LA a couple of years ago, I did comb thru the LA CH Board. Most of my time was spent around Santa Barbara, so it was a little off the beaten track for the California CH Boards. But my experience was that I should have just asked here. The recs were much better, in general, and far more useful.

The problem in trying to use other CH boards when going on trips is that there is such a wide variation between posters that one cannot be sure who is trustworthy, and who is not.

There are a number of posters here - Janet, Erik, VI & GWiv come to mind - who know different parts of LA quite well, and seem to go visit failry often. They have great recs, just ask. Also, a search for Los Angeles found at least ten topics with that in the name.

That does not mean you can't start an LTHForum for LA, Tony...

As someone who's had a very hard time having good food in Los Angeles, despite the conviction (even before Erik's reports) that it must exist there, I guess the only thing I can suggest is trying to figure out who the most solid posters on the CH LA board are, such as Gold, and reading them rather than the board as a whole. (Ctrl+F or whatever find function your browser has should make that fairly easy.) But I agree that a lot of recommendations are for things that are not that special.

I haven't been back to LA since I started my internet food obsession but I used to go a lot and I never found a book whose suggestions seemed worth the bother-- a lot of recommended spots for burgers, Mexican, whatever were no better than places I'd just stumbled on here. I am looking forward to whenever my next trip turns out to be, and hope to do better at long last thanks to places posted about here.

    TonyC,

Besides some of the excellent tips you'll find here, you can also check out eGullet's California forum.

A couple of points on this post and also this thread:

I've met a few of the LA hounds, and they would fit in right at home here, with our eating (and other) sensibilities. I think if you just distill down to the core group on that board, Chino Wayne, Russkar, Jerome, Dorothy, WLA, MC Michael, Sandra W, you will get very good advice. You may try to contact some of those people specifically.

Jonathon Gold is a pro, not a poster on LA Chowhound. His book, Counter-Intelligence, on eating in LA is one of my all time favorite food books. It's quite the guide to where and what to eat.

Gold writes weekly for the LA Weekly, and most of his stuff, including things in the book are on their web site.

    Hi,
After a decade of loving Chicago, the family and I are packing up and moving out West. We'll be living in LA come November.

I'm curious if anything has changed since '05 when this was written and whether there's a good LA food forum/blog? I'll be checking out Gold and eGullet, but I'd love to find something a fraction as helpful as this site has been.

As an aside, this site has been a godsend for my time in Chicago and I'll miss it greatly.

Interestingly, Tony C, the progenitor of this thread, has an LA-focused blog: http://sinosoul.com/, and he tweets as "Sinosoul"
