Following up on a lead from our own Ronnie Suburban in Ageless North Shore Magazine, I found myself in Northfield at Seul's Tavern to try their much touted (by Ronnie) Reuben sandwich. I found both the Tavern and the sandwich inviting and wonderful. As Ronnie said elsewhere, this Reuben is really much more than the sum of its parts. Other than the bland, unsalted food service fries, this was a great sandwich. Suel's is one of those little hidden away places that it's nice to know about if you're in the area. Free Wi-Fi, too.

I'm really glad you enjoyed it, Steve. As much as it's widely-known in the area, Seul's still seems to be somewhat off the radar. I've mentioned it a bunch of times here but always in the context of other conversations (Reubens, Northfield area, etc.). Thanks, for starting a dedicated thread.

As for the fries, it's foodservice across the board but they will happily cook them well-done upon request. They also offer some thin-cut 'buffalo' (seasoned) fries, which are tasty. But no, you're not going to get fresh-cut fries at Seul's.

As I have mentioned both here and at Ageless Northshore, not only are the reubens at Seul's outstanding but they also serve up some great wings, which rival my other 'favorite' spot for them, Toon's Bar. They're cooked in the classic style -- fried naked -- and then tossed in a mixture of butter and (Franks?) hot sauce after cooking . . .

In this 'spicy' version, chile flakes are added to the mix. The 'standard' wings at Seul's are plenty hot, though.

There are a few other choice items available at Seul's and the daily specials -- conceived and prepared by chef George and crew -- are always a treat, too. Our office used to be located directly across the street from Seul's and we'd get lunch from there 3 days a week. Now that we've moved up to Highland Park, it's still on our regular rotation but we only get there for lunch about once a month. Still, if you're in the area, it's a great spot to grab a bite.

Totally off my radar to the extent when Steve suggested Seul's for a reuben I said "where"? I've passed it, read about it on LTHForum but for some reason it never stuck. My loss as it is exactly the type of joint I enjoy, old school tavern with good food.

Spacious with a large bar and two dining areas Seul's has that time-aged comfortable feel chain restaurants fork over 7-figures to designers to achieve. Add-in a saucy tough chick bartenderess I was planning a next visit before I tasted the food.

Chili is Midwest, the type I grew up with, beans with a suggestion of sweet. Onions, Tabasco, pickled jalapenos, cheese and oyster crackers served on the side. I liked it, reminded me of my mom's chili, Texans need not apply. Steve's crab bisque, a daily special, was rich, creamy and had a bit of heat, but they should have spelled crab with a k.

I am a sucker for club house sandwiches and Suel's makes a good one, lots of crisp bacon, real turkey decent tomatoes, lettuce and mayo. I would have liked a little more mayo, but I am Hellman's fan. Meat packed rueben, creamy 1000 island, tangy kraut, swiss joined in harmony, I just wish the bread was little more Highland Park than Barrington.

I can't wait to go back for wings, which look terrific in Ronnie's post, and the house made thin crust pizza, available after 5pm. Melissa, the bartenderess, said Seul's makes the dough and sauce in-house.

    Enjoy,
    Gary

LOL, yeah, it's decidedly more Barrington than HP but I do like Seuls' style of reuben and think a more serious rye might actually be a detriment. Glad you gave it a try and enjoyed it.

The dining room is extremely kid friendly. There's a little mini arcade tucked into an alcove so bring quarters:)

I live two blocks from Seuls but I've never had the reuben. It's on my list for some nite this week.

After some troubles over the past several months, there's a new plan for Seul's, including no longer calling it Seul's . . .

at WilmetteBeacon.com, Laura Michaels wrote:A long-standing Northfield restaurant will undergo extensive renovations – and a name change – next month if the Northfield Village Board gives the OK for three local residents to take over Seul's Tavern and Grill.

Wilmette resident Charles Bidwell III, his son Chad Bidwell and business partner Pete Murray, who together form Stormy Chadwicks LLC, appeared before Northfield's Plan Commission July 5 to present their proposal for Seul's, 1735 Orchard Lane.

In their first meeting since January, commissioners unanimously approved and recommended to the Village Board for approval a special use permit that would allow the trio to operate Stormy's Tavern and Grill. Village trustees will consider the request at their meeting Tuesday, July 19.
