Kabul House started as a franchised La Rosa pizzeria on Main St. in Evanston. Then its owner, Abdul Qazi, opened the space next door, to offer the food from his native land, which he billed as "Afghan Fine Cuisine." It became crowded; he gave up the pizzeria, and moved to Skokie. While popular there, ultimately there were problems with the building, and he moved the operation to Elk Grove Village. He's back in Skokie now, so it's close enough to Evanston for the Evanston Lunch Group™ to convene there Tuesday, December 7 at 12:30 pm.

    See you there.

    Tuesday the 7th? or Monday?

I love Kabul House and the Qazi family. I really want to be there but have to check my schedule which is evolving. Can you count me as pencilled in?

I thought I had posted we were coming, but apparently not. Count us in, in any case. We are delighted that Kabul House has returned to Skokie. Much as we cherished the restaurant, Elk Grove Village was awfully far to go...

It was a great time and an excellent lunch. Sorry you had to miss it. I posted my thoughts (and some pics) over on the main Kabul House thread.

Company and food were both great (company always is), but I was especially impressed by the service. As we were going over the menu and trying to figure out the order, our server (forgot his name, but he's the son of Abdul, the owner) suggested we get a selection of almost everything on the menu, for a set price of $16-$17 each. That worked out very well. We tipped generously.

I thought everything served was excellent - highlights being all the appetizers, the kebabs, and the yogurt-based drink, dough (a salad in a glass). And our server described the chutney as "just a bunch of green vegetables my Dad found at the market, and mixed 'em up." He was being modest. It had a deep flavor, slightly chunky, with a bit of heat that built slowly.

I'll go back soon - probably while they're still BYOB. (Apparently, they're considering getting a liquor license - their previous Skokie location was always BYOB.)

Watch for the announcement of the next Evanston Lunch Group™ meeting in mid-January, probably in mid-January at Bluette, Wilmette's new restaurant from the folks at Sweets & Savories.

Our server's name is Zackie, though I have no idea if that's how it's actually spelled. He was also the server at my last meal at Kabul House and he took really great care of us. Today, his suggestion on how to arrange the lunch was a smart one -- and really a great value. That was a lot of food and not counting the additional tip we left, lunch -- with a beverage, a 20% tip and tax -- would have been $21.50 per person. Service was really good throughout the meal. Food came out in a very timely manner. Fresh plates were offered and brought out very rapidly. Empty plates seemed to be taken away intuitively during most of the meal. We got interesting information about the dishes we were served and even offered more food when some of the appetizer plates were running low. It's clear that they really care about their customers at Kabul House -- not surprising from a family-owned and operated business.

Thanks, Tom, for putting this together. It was an especially successful outing.

I am so glad i was able to join the Evanston group today. As others have stated, the meal and the service were excellent, and I thought each dish was well flavored and had great eye appeal. Kadu, the perfectly sweet roasted pumpkin dish with yogurt was, in my opinion, the standout dish of the afternoon- i could have eaten the entire serving.

    Thank you Tom for organizing.
