    All LTHers,

I dont often favor giving a website free pr, but restaurant.com has a 90% off discount today only. I know several of the users here have tried the service, and I assure you I have no ties to the site. I thought it was worth checking out. If the mods see fit, please remove or reclassify.

Thanks, for the heads up on this. I noticed that among some of the other notable places available, GNR nominee Birrieria Zaragoza has a couple of different coupon options for sale.

HEART is a valid promo code right now too, through 2/14...

if you're interested in always having the codes, it's probably easier to just sign up for the restaurant.com e-mail list, they just e-mail them to you as they come out then... https://www.restaurant.com/signup.asp borders rewards sends out the codes to their e-mail list subscribers every time they update them (which lately for restaurant.com seems to be every month or two).

    Hey all,

I dropped a dollar bill in a Salvation Army kettle this morning at the Walgreens on S Canal and the bell ringer handed me a card for a $10 restaurant.com certificate. Here's some more information about the program:

I don't know if all the Salvation Army bell ringers have these cards, but it was a nice surprise for me.

    Happy holidays!

Recently, I have used two $25 certificates which cost $3 at Las Palmas Restaurant (Lindenhurst) and Uno Chicago Grill (Gurnee). The food at Las Palmas was pretty good and my 5 year old loved the salsa. At Uno Chicago Grill we had a their largest deep dish pizza, cheese stick app, kids sized pepperoni pizza, and a round of cocktails for $33. Well worth it. My wife and I usually cook at home and do not go out to eat often, especially when you consider the lack of good restaurants up here in the Round Lake/Gurnee area. Restaurant.com gives us an excuse to get out to some of the local places. We picked up a $25 certificate for $3 for the Backyard Steak Pit in Gurnee and can't wait to try that one.

Is anyone aware of issues related to how Restaurant.com treats participating restaurants?

Since being directed there a while back by a post on LTH, I've made strategic use of their certificates, picking up ones when they're on sale for either neighborhood places to make going out spontaneously easier/cheaper, or for places near to theaters I'll be working in to allow for some meals out on 2-show days.

Recently, I've had 2 Restaurant.com-related incidents that make me wonder whether I ought to reconsider using them. (Not a meaningful statistical sampling, of course, but enough to catch my attention.)

A couple of weeks ago I used one at a local Thai place. When I presented it my whole life went Seinfeld before my eyes. There I was, with my family, in a very small storefront, with the owner balling me out in barely comprehensible English to the bemusement of the rest of the room. While I couldn't make out all the subtleties of the prosecution's argument, the broad strokes were pretty clear: He hates them. He's tried to discontinue his participation, but they keep selling the certs. Also, they never expire, so they just keep coming. They take advantage (this part, not really clear).

This went on for quite a while. Now, in all sorts of ways, my host was in the wrong. No one held a gun to his head to sign up, and he kept complaining that it was impossible to make money giving me $25 off a $35 check. Well, I'd agree, but I didn't set the terms.

Still, his evident outrage and emotional distress stayed with me. I like his restaurant and I'd like him to prosper. I began to wonder if restaurant.com was in fact mistreating businesses in some way.

Cut to last week: In Denver visiting my parents. They took me to a small Russian cafe; very bare bones, very much like many small Thai places here. Delicious dumplings and a spectacular creation (can't remember the name) of sort of thick latkes with mandoline-thin slices of apple draped over them and served with whipped cream. Overall, a sweet-savory effect a bit like french toast.

On the way out I noticed a hand-lettered sign in the window, in somewhat broken English, advising and apologizing that they would not accept Restaurant.com certs. any longer, but they were aware there are still some out there and if you bring one in, they'll explain and work it out with you.

Again this made me wonder whether small foreign business owners are getting roped into something they discover later is terribly disadvantageous.

Curious if anyone has any info/insight. Because otherwise, these certs. have been rather a boon to me.

I've been a regular Restaurant.com user for years. Never had a problem. My only "incident" was a joint that I had a certificate for that went out of business. They credited my purchase back to me - no hassle.

I have used restaurant.com for years and actually expect to have problems. I look at it as a gamble with very good odds. Over the years I have had merchants flat out not accept, or add qualifications that are found nowhere on original agreement or certificate.

In Brookfield right now http://mindyourownbusinessburgers.com/ has a sign saying they will not accept restaurant.com certificates and have tried multiple times to have restaurant.com remove them from their website.

Xeni-Pec also has decided to not take the coupon on weekends despite the gift certificates having no such qualifications. Normally I wouldn't mind about the weekend thing but we have a $100 certificate on $200 worth of food which kind of necessitates I go with a group and that is difficult on work days.

I have never asked for a refund so I am not commenting on the restaurants or the website just stating that I have had some issues, YMMV
