I was just at Wolfy's today and saw on the specials board "Fresh Cut Fries Today." Yes, they finally have fresh cut fries - but only on Saturdays. They are even thinner than the regular frozen fries they normally have. They were excellent, and suggested to one of the owners to at least try to have them on a weekday as well, maybe Friday (which is usually the day my office gets Wolfy's  ).

Stopped by Wolfy's last week for a tasty, late lunch on NYE . . .

Charred Salami on French Bread with mustard and grilled onion
Nice rendition, well-grilled and delicious with a nice 'toasting' on the french bread.

    Image
    Hotdog with relish and mustard
Vienna, natural-casing dog with a great snap.

    Image
Cheeseburger with ketchup, mustard, pickle and grilled onion
Love the free-formed patties. Charred, juicy and definitely not overcooked; slightly pink on the inside.

    Image
Cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato and mayo
The wife's order, also cooked nicely.

    Image
Chicken Breast on Pita - lettuce, grilled onion, mayo and hot gardiniera
The chicken breast -- from Harrison's Poultry Farm in Glenview -- is cut into large shards after it's grilled. This had a really clear, chickeny flavor, which was a real eye-opener. It was also cooked really well -- plenty moist, well-seasoned and nicely charred.

Decent but as others have posted, more or less the weak link at Wolfy's.

Everything was prepared really well. Ingredients -- from buns to lettuce -- were fresh in a clear and obvious and way. Service was fast, efficient and extremely friendly. The above food, with 3 beverages, was $32, which made it a great value. We live relatively close to Wolfy's and don't get there very often but this lunch was terrific and made me feel like I need to eat there more frequently. It can be tough traffic-wise to get there for dinner on a weeknight but that's no excuse for not patronizing this place more often, even if it means picking our spots. We'll be back soon...maybe on a Saturday to try those fresh cut fries.

    Two things:
    1. I was sitting at the ol desk not 5 minutes ago thinking about the beef sammich I had from Wolfy's on Monday, and how it is easily best in the area, imo. Kinda cracked me up a little as I open up lth, and get blasted with more awesome ronnie_s photos from where else, but Wofy's!

    2. I'm guessing that if you were to hold some sort of class with tips / tricks for food porn, you'd be surprised at the demand. I'm sure you are modest about it, (as I've thrown plenty of compliments your way in the past,) but there is definitely something going on here. You get compliment upon compliment for your photos, and deservedly so. These might just be a coupla sammiches and some fries, but once again, those pix are remarkable.
We cannot be friends if you do not know the difference between Mayo and Miracle Whip.

Thanks, seebee, for the kind words.

Next time I'm at Wolfy's, I'm definitely going to try the beef sammich. I can't believe I forgot this time!!

Yeah, the beef is definitely one of the better ones in the area, but if you like it dipped, make sure you tell them to really dip it. At least one of the cooks is a little dip-shy. A few trips ago I made it clear I wanted it dipped to Josh (one of the owners) who told the cook to "Dip the S**T out of it!" That's how I order it everytime! :)

Hey Ronnie, how was that charred salami sandwich?
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?

Very nice. I liked the thickness of the slice because even though it had a really solid and flavorful char on it, the interior of the salami held up very well, In addition to that great char, it also had some of the best qualities of uncooked salami, mainly the mouthfeel and the definition. I think this was very well thought out. Also, the french bread had a light crispiness and a perfect tug to it. The sweetness of the grilled onions and the mildly salty bite of the yellow mustard were great, too, though I'm guessing any number of other condiments combinations would have been good.

Stopped in today for a late lunch, good as ever. However, this location is no longer a Wolfy's. About a month ago Josh renamed the place, wait for it, Josh's. Same great food. I did notice that there is a sign mentioning that all the poultry is from Harrisons and the ground beef comes from Excellence in Meats. Everything else is still Vienna as far as i could tell. Anyway, I continue to love this place and Josh is an excellent guy and deserves your patronage.

Technically this place has been Wolfy's in name only, the food has been Josh's the whole time. For example as iblock9 mentioned - this Wolfy's uses a fresh ground chuck/brisket blend for the burgers (as seen on The Cheeseburger Show) from Elegance in Meats in Northbrook, while at Wolfy's in Chicago the burgers are frozen. I keep bugging him to have fresh cut fries on Fridays when my office orders from there, but he's only doing them on Saturday still.

Unfortunately Wolfy's/Josh's is no longer doing Fresh Cut Fries on Saturday's.

I'm wondering if the beef has changed as well?

Two work buddies have had the beef, and both have said it has indeed changed. One of them said it's not a change for the better in his opinion. I didn't get a direct answer yet from the other.

    Hi,

I stopped in for lunch this week. I ordered an Italian beef dipped with sweet peppers for my Mom. I ordered a hamburger for myself. As I carried drinks to the table, I realized we never discussed how to cook the burger. I walked back to request my burger be cooked medium rare. "We cook those to medium due to health department regulations." Not missing a beat, I asked them to cancel my hamburger.

I ordered a gyro, which they cut off the cone then scattered on a griddle while the fluffy pita bread warmed nearby. Compared to a recent gyro Greektown, this was quite to my liking.

My Mom's Italian beef was pretty dry and the meat flavorless. The sweet peppers were under seasoned, too. They did dip the beef.

I had been far closer to Cooker's in Northbrook than Josh's, but I thought I would get a better experience. Maybe I would have been happier if I had a Polish or grilled salami, but I wasn't in the mood for those.

If I happen to be near, I might return. I'm not likely to go out of my way.

    Regards,
    Cathy2
