Vernon Hills will be getting a Tilted Kilt...at least it isn't another sushi restaurant.

Why is that good? Would you like your business to be subject to the capricious whims of bluenoses and busybodies?

Not to mention that downtown Evanston is awash in vacant storefronts at present. A viable business would be hugely preferable to the big vacant space that exists there now.

I don't have a business, sorry. I do have a preference for not being surrounded by hordes of drunken morons who want to leer at scantily dressed girls but are too timid to go to an actual strip club.

I'm sure the chicken wings are delish, though.

Which to me speaks more about current business owners influencing the ultimate decision. I live near Evanston and eat at various spots there periodically. If the economy is still hitting it hard then Pete's and Tommy Nevins and Bar Louie are spitting distance from that location. Whether a Tilted Kilt would draw new business into that area or draw it away from other businesses is anyone's guess but I can't imagine that wasn't a consideration.

Not to get all political, but why should what other restaurants want make a difference to whether a new place should open or not? I'm sure that goes on, but it's no justification to me.

I can't believe that no one has yet suggested the obvious solution--a strip club in downtown Evanston.

(Sorry, cilantro. I'm actually sympathetic to your cause. :) )

D.C. Sarnies opened today and we went there for dinner. It is in the old Bennigans in front of the Home Depot on Lake Cook Road.
It is owned by Highland bakery so it features their breads.
It's a sit down restaurant with a bar. They brought samples of their rolls to our table when we sat down.

They have salads, soups, sandwiches, build your own sandwiches, burgers... craft beers.

I had the build your own chicken breast sandwich on a pretzel roll and my husband had the chipotle grilled chicken sandwich.
    We both enjoyed our meals.

I'm pretty sure I didn't offer anything other than rank speculation. Although having gone through zoning hearings (and random decisions therefrom) in the near North 'burbs, it wouldn't surprise me if those considerations didn't enter into it.

I agree it is a awful decision by the Evanston bureaucrats. Evanston needs new businesses downtown big-time.
These fools are acting like the Tilted Kilt is a strip club, big deal they wear short skirts and low cut tops. What is next no bikinis at the Evanston beaches?

My wife and I ate there for a "preview" meal prior to opening this past Friday. We both enjoyed our meals. The burger was well-cooked and the pretzel bun was fantastic. We had something called grilled cheese fingers and chili as an appetizer which was a good kickoff to the meal.

Sure, Evanston needs new businesses but they also need businesses that will draw customers in as opposed to just redistributing existing customers. Not sure that adding more pub-like offerings is the answer.

Time for NU to consider a dress code [again].

GAF is too modest to note that he is quoted on Evanston's reluctance to allow the Tilted Kilt to open in today's Trib.

Basically though, aesthetic and quality-of-life considerations wouldn't be admissible in the institutionalized approval process if they weren't intended to be part of the institutionalized approval process.

I'm not sure what you mean by that, but I don't feel like "aesthetics" and "quality-of-life considerations" should be a part of any decision to prohibit someone from starting a business. Traffic, parking, or other issues that affect other businesses or residents should be looked at, but the rest is just snobbery and rent-seeking by the existing business owners.

Sorry if I was unclear. What I mean by that is that, regardless of whether you or I think a Tilted Kilt is offensive or what you and I think on the subject of whether aesthetics and community lifestyle ought to be considered in a business application, these issues are obviously meant to be considered--or the city of Evanston's review process wouldn't allow them to be considered.

Personally, I think it's a good thing that they are part of the review process, but that isn't my main point.
