The application was denied.

Good.
Why is that good? Would you like your business to be subject to the capricious whims of bluenoses and busybodies?
I don't have a business, sorry. I do have a preference for not being surrounded by hordes of drunken morons who want to leer at scantily dressed girls but are too timid to go to an actual strip club.

So don't go. Simple.

Not to mention that downtown Evanston is awash in vacant storefronts at present. A viable business would be hugely preferable to the big vacant space that exists there now.

Which to me speaks more about current business owners influencing the ultimate decision. I live near Evanston and eat at various spots there periodically. If the economy is still hitting it hard then Pete's and Tommy Nevins and Bar Louie are spitting distance from that location. Whether a Tilted Kilt would draw new business into that area or draw it away from other businesses is anyone's guess but I can't imagine that wasn't a consideration.

It is owned by Highland bakery so it features their breads.
It's a sit down restaurant with a bar. They brought samples of their rolls to our table when we sat down.
They have salads, soups, sandwiches, build your own sandwiches, burgers... craft beers.
I had the build your own chicken breast sandwich on a pretzel roll and my husband had the chipotle grilled chicken sandwich.
We both enjoyed our meals.

I'm pretty sure I didn't offer anything other than rank speculation. Although having gone through zoning hearings (and random decisions therefrom) in the near North 'burbs, it wouldn't surprise me if those considerations didn't enter into it.

I agree it is a awful decision by the Evanston bureaucrats. Evanston needs new businesses downtown big-time.
These fools are acting like the Tilted Kilt is a strip club, big deal they wear short skirts and low cut tops. What is next no bikinis at the Evanston beaches?

Time for NU to consider a dress code [again].

Haven't gone to an NU Football game, ever, then, have you...

But is it really fair to judge NU and Evanston by the behavior of a bunch of UMich folk?

Basically though, aesthetic and quality-of-life considerations wouldn't be admissible in the institutionalized approval process if they weren't intended to be part of the institutionalized approval process.
chitrader wrote:I'm not sure what you mean by that, but I don't feel like "aesthetics" and "quality-of-life considerations" should be a part of any decision to prohibit someone from starting a business. Traffic, parking, or other issues that affect other businesses or residents should be looked at, but the rest is just snobbery and rent-seeking by the existing business owners.
