I agree, sounds like Scott Ascher let things get run down and owes a lot in back taxes and fees. I hope they pull this off and do well.

Since the Charlie's Ale House in Andersonville turned out to be owned by the good folks of Anteprima (before they turned it into Acre), is the former Charlie's Ale House on Webster (soon to be Derby) also owned by them?

I believe that's the store currently at Waukegan and Dempster (20 years ago it was "October 5"). I've always liked their meats and deli, their fruit and "generai" produce is very good for the price, but it's not as wide a selection as Assi Plaza. I haven't hit this place in ages, since I don't drive past it (or anywhere) on the way home from work anymore.

Aha! I thought that store on Waukegan was just expanding, but they're moving. I go to the gym on the opposite corner, so I'll keep everyone updated on what moves in there!

Also coming to that same shopping center ( far west end ) is a Culver's. The on again / off again saga continues, and apparently it is "on" again. Temporary sign attached to a construction fence.

I don't think it's been mentioned, but The Bedford opened in the old bank on the corner of Ashland and Division in Wicker Park a week or two ago. Mark Steuer, who was previously chef at HotChocolate and exec sous chef at The Gage, is the chef there. Reviews on yelp are pretty mixed so far. I'm sure I'll make it there soon, as it's not too far from the house.

On the way to Al Bawadi last night, I spied with my little eye "Sultan's Palace - Indian And Pakistani Foods" around 85th and Harlem. Actually, it was next door to Huckleberry's Pancake House (same mini strip mall,) there was also a Middle Eastern sweet shop/bakery next door too. I popped in for a menu - looked very typical, short and to the point - few veggie dishes, butter chicken, nehari, and more of the standards. Gentleman manning the counter said they had been open for two months. Friday / Saturday 10.00 buffet. The buffet had 6 items at the most, and then a fruit and salad table with 4 items. I'm gonna be here ASAP - prices were right ( I was secretly hoping Al Bawadi would be too crowded so we could try Sultan's but we had baba ghannouj on the brain - you know how it is.)

Spotted: in the occasionally open, usually closed storefront immediately to the west of Ghareeb Nawaz, new awning and banners in the window which appear to indicate a branch of the Suadi Al-Baik fried chicken chain. I was immediately skeptical as some of the language on the banners was a bit odd - "haleem" "nihari" - certainly not things this Arabian KFC competitor is known for.

After a little google research, I learned that Al-Baik ripoffs are quite common around the globe (known as "Al-Faiks" in the twitterverse).

I'm kinda sad we aren't getting an Al-Baik. They are well known for broasted chicken, and I think Bourdain paid a visit on his trip to Saudi. No matter, I still appreciate the blatant trademark infringement, and will always welcome a new nihari/haleem specialist. Unfortunately, that location is a bit cursed, so we will see how it goes.
