Anyone know if this an up, down, or sideways move in quality? I didn't check the price because I wasn't prepared to purchase as I really liked the the straight Kirkland brand both for quality, taste, and price.

Niles carries them both. The Berrio was closer to the main aisle and the Kirkland was buried in the oil/spice aisle.

Perfect! We shop regularly there, after shopping at Fresh Farms and buying gas. We have lunch at China Chef with the sales tax savings, especially on the bottled water. Thanks!

Here's what Cooks Illustrated wrote about Berio in Summer 2008 in a tasting of supermarket olive oils:

While some tasters found this oil “sweet” and “buttery” with “medium body” and “slight spice at the end,” others complained that it had “zero olive flavor” and was “so floral it’s almost like eating perfume”; still others noted a “bitter” aftertaste. In pasta, it was “extremely mild” to the point of being “boring.”

They recommend it with reservations. They also conclude that most of the supermarket oils are not remarkable.

I haven't tried the Costco oil that comes in the plastic jug. But I have been a regular buyer of their Toscano oil that comes in a smaller glass jar. This is pretty good (for the money) and my guess is that Berio would be a step down from it.

I bought it on Saturday at the Niles store. I didn't notice a Berio replacement (at least not yet). Glad I just picked up another bottle.

I buy the Kirkland "Estate" variety in the square bottles when it's fresh (last time I looked, the Mt Prospect store still had 2009 harvest), it's a bright, spicy oil. Lately, I've bought the Berio-produced "Kirkland Signature" organic in the 1.5L bottle. It's a decent price (although I don't remember what I paid for it), very sweet and mild, with a good olive aroma. Optimally, I'd have both around for different uses.

Just bought three jugs today at $10.99 each. They had a good supply left. The use by date is July 2012.

I used to buy the Estate variety as well but now buy the Fresh Farms branded Olympia Greek olive oil for salads and drizzling. I use the Kirkland 2 liter oil for cooking even though it is extra virgin because at that price, why not.

Yesterday at Costco I saw a 1.75L bottle of Kirkland Bourbon. It is aged 7 years and is about 103 proof. According to the sleuths at straightbourbon.com, it is made by Jim Beam and, while not great, is very good for the money.

I didn't buy it because I wanted to do a little research first. But I think I'll head back soon to pick up a bottle. The mint plants are picking up and I've got to start using them.

It's possible that I misremembered the size of the bottle. I thought it was 1.75L, but it could have been 1L.
    How did you like it?

I didn't care for it. When I tasted it, it did immediately taste like Beam to me, which is not a favorite of mine. But if you like Beam, you'll probably enjoy it. Fwiw, the bottle I sampled was a 1-liter.

it is a bit strong on it's own so I like it with a couple of cubes of good ice.
Pretty good value but not the best bourbon I've had but what do I know, I like Maker's Mark

A couple of finds at Costco today that were new (at least to me -- I actually saw them on my last visit, but just purchased today). First, as noted in this thread, St. Germain elderflower liqueur at $32.99 ($7 cheaper than current pricing at Binny's) -- currently comes with a pitcher/stirrer set. Second, for those of you who like (or are willing to tolerate) your dairy with a side of xenophobia, Oberweis chocolate ice cream -- 2 quarts for $8.99 (I believe they are $6 each at the Oberweis retail stores, although you can effectively get the same per unit price as at Costco when the retail stores run a 4 for the price of 3 promotion, which they periodically do).

Yesterday, at the Clybourn store, I bought Mulderbosch Chenin Blanc (10.99) Paco and Lola Albarino (13.79) and Delice cheese. No St. Andre but I happily grabbed the Delice in its place (9.99/lb)

I think the more important thing is that for the most part the parking lot disruption is over.

    Hi,

At Costco-Glenview this evening, I ordered a Polish. The gal inquired, "Do you want sauerkraut with it?" I didn't think I heard her correctly the first time and had her repeat it. She said sauerkraut is available upon request, though it is not always available. When I agreed, she handed over a small plastic cup along with my Polish.

A unexpected secret condiment at Costco, will wonders ever cease?

    Regards,
    Cathy2

LDS= Mormons. They believe that a family should be self sufficient and have 1 years worth of food and water stored in the event of some kind of upheaval. A couple of these packages would be perfect for them. I lived in Salt Lake City years ago, when I started looking to buy a house most had huge storage areas in the basement where all this food and water was kept. Seemed very strange at the time.
