Worked at Macneal Hospital but never went to this place which is only across the street, on the North side of the Berwyn train tracks. It doesn't look like much of a place from the outside, seats are torn on the inside and the drunks coming out of the pub next door were seen to be banging into the window...if you can get past all this then this is one great diner! Have been there twice now for lunch. Service is friendly, quick and it's clean and also cheap. I was suprised at the little touches that for me make it stand out above other diners. The homemade soup is fantastic and they usually have a choice of 3. Had the pea and ham which was very rich and flavoufull and i was pleased to be picking a bay leaf out of it, the sourkraut soup came with a boiled potato. My friend declared her rueben one of the best, the corned beef looked meltingly tender, and was happy the thousand island came on the side. I had a turkey club first time, which consisted of freshly carved turkey and a nice amount of bacon. I choose fresh fruit as a side (which comes with most of the sandwiches) and was given a generous portion of perfectly ripe cantaloupe on the first occassion and a huge piece of watermelon the second time. It's not destination dining but definetly worth a look in if your in the area and want some good diner food.

I ate at Two Son's several times about 10 years ago while visiting at MacNeal. I was impressed that every aspect had that home-made touch. From the food to the little flower vases. Glad to hear they are still around. I made the mistake of stopping for a beer next door. Enough said about that.

Been here three times since this post, and the turkey is right on time. The "soups of the day" have all been pretty bad foodservice crap from my limited samplings. They do, however, have a sauerkraut soup that seems to be on offer every day - maybe that is their homemade soup. It doesn't sound like it would really float my boat, though I've never tried it.I should though, since I toss about half of the soup I get with my sandwich order. So, I haven't tried anything else but the club, and a turkey reuben, and the sandwiches are very decent for the price. For the club, I go without mayo, since I bet they use fake, sugary glop, but I will ask them next time what the brand name of the mayo is. Fries are crinkle cut, foodservice variety. Usually crisp and light. I dig em.

    What's a Bohemian dish?
I'll look on their menu tonight and report back, but I honestly don't really know what a "Bohemian Dish" is.

Sorry to hear you had crummy soups-i have never had those ones you mentioned-they didn't look good from the photos.... The sauerkraut soup is really flavourfull and comes with a side of boiled potato, it is definetly homemade as are the chicken dumpling and split pea which i and my dining companions have really enjoyed.

    Fall Off Alert!
    Backstory:
I called up a few weeks ago to place my order for a "club to go" lunch. No answer. Whatevs. Called the next day. No answer. Uh Oh. Found out there was a remodel going on. New sign, new name, suposedly same ppl, same menu. New name is Tastee Corner Cafe. Website under construction. Hoped my six-fitty-plus-tax-club-sammich would still be on offer when I called today. I ordered it up, and what I got was pretty much a clamshell full of ass. There are rumors floating around that this place will no longer be serving pork because of religious reasons which could explain my "bacon," - which is fine. I forgot to grab a menu, or even look at one while I was there. It didn't even occur to me, since I saw the same guy in back cooking. I thought I was back in business on the "sneaky awesome turkey club on the cheap for lunch" front, but I was sadly, sadly mistaken. Oh, did you want photographic proof of the garbage they slung to me? Funny you should ask.

    On first glance,
    Image
I noticed that the fries were different. Crinkle cut foodservice variety. But a salty coating was on these. Too salty. Crisp and light though. I did a double take, because I thought I saw a slice of white-ish cheese on the lower right hand corner sammich portion right? So I looked a little closer, and Houston, we have a pretty big f'n problem:
    Image

At this point, I knew that I had to grab the camera. Not only was the turkey suspect, but the bacon was as well! Let the games begin! The deconstruction commenced...
    Image
BWAHAHAHAHAHA! I should have thrown my $$$ right in the toilet. Turkey? Surely you jest.

This one tried to jump because it knew I was gonna talk shit about it, I think.
    Image

Soon, the whole pile of ass was strewn aside. It reminded me of the scene in Poltergeist where Craig T starts peeling chunks of his face off while looking in the bathroom mirror. There were flaps of wet, gelatinous, ersatz "turkey" just being thrown into this pile:
    Image

And then...it was Man Vs Bacon. No amount of training could overcome this foe. Please note, in the pile of garbage turkey they charged me for above, you can see the quality of the meat like subsance has actual pock marks where my guess is that when the concoction was being molded into its final formation, perhaps some gaseuous pockets were trapped when the gelatinous mass was formed. You can tell this is a very high quality chemist's interpretation of a meat. Well guess what? If you can actually stand to stare at these "bacon" pictures without gagging, you'll see little similar pock marks. Yaaaay me! I'm eatin good today!
    Image
Oh yeah, your eyes are not deceiving you:
    Image

Mmmmmmm. They should accept monopoly money as payment for this faux garbage:
    Image
Needless to say, dealbreaker deluxe. Soup was a chicken / rice, and was pretty good, actually. Doubt I'll give this place another chance. I really liked it before. Oh well. Plenty of other places take actual pride in their product.

That bacon really does look fake. Like Facon. Forget the bohemian food....I would not want fake pork and dumplings.

The food was as bad as that sandwich looks..or maybe worse. I nearly posted about it but i didn't want to relive it..Theres only brandos beef left to go for a quickie lunch now...

    Oh No, no, no -
Don't forget about Tonini's or The Garlic Clove. Tonini's will hook you up with a Pelligrini Sub using a decent in house roasted turkey, and hellman's mayo. Call in your order, and pick it up at an off time - super quick. They also have awesome chicken salad (on the days that Patricia makes it.) Ask for a sample before you buy. When Patricia does not make it, it's overcooked, and oversalted. Garlic Clove is pretty decent diner eats with a bit of ambition. They use cheap, fake mayo (some off brand stuff which is labeled "salad dressing" which means is it basically white sugar and definitely NOT mayo, or even close to mayo, yet for some reason, these restaurants these days call it mayo.) but anyway, The Garlic Clove is pretty decent indeed. Standard diner fare, but also, things like bacon wrapped scallops, fried green tomatoes, and crab cakes done SURPRISINGLY well. Like, not straight out of a frozen foodservice box and into a deep fryer like you'd expect. Someone in the kitchen there knows what they are doing and takes pride in their food. If you can take the salt hit, the sausage gumbo soup is pretty good - they have it every day. The macaroni and cheese is much better than I thought it would be. I like the place. they are new in town, and obvious they aim to please.

I like Brando's - their meatball sammich is a thing of beauty, imo, but since they first opened, I haven't gotten an order of fries from there that has even come remotely close to as good as the first few times I've gone, adn I don't view their beef as anything special (just my opinion) so they've been relegated to my meatball go to spot which is about 3 per year. DAMN good meatball sammich tho. I have yet to try Roberto's on Oak Park Avenue north of the tracks there. Place just scares me, and I've never heard anything good or bad about it.

Um, more like done surprisingly well for a diner, in Berwyn, in Illinois. It's like, you don't go to a diner in Baltimore, and order an Italian Beef with hot giardiniera.

    Credit where it's due...
I've been pretty bullish on this place for the past few years. It's well back in my good graces. Went yesterday, and they ran out of corned beef for my normal rueben "pannini" (don't you start judgin' me.) Anyway, I hemmed and hawed, asked the server if I should just sub out roast beef for the corned beef in the rueben. She leaned in, and said, "you want the turkey." I had shied away from their turkey since calling them out in this thread, so with that horrific memory, I asked with conviction, "Is it processed garbage?" She confirmed that it was roasted-in-house-tom-bird. I trust that server. We're good.

    SUCCESS!
    BACK IN BIDNESS!!!

    Turkey is back!

The thread's title is "Two Son's," but it is now, "Tastee Corner."
