A friend of mine informed me about this dinner--The Dinner in White--that will be happening in Chicago on August 16.
    http://thedinnerinwhitechicago.vpweb.com/
It's based off of a huge event in Paris, which draws thousands of people, all through word of mouth. From this website, it looks like it is similar, yet very different than the Diner en Blanc event happening later in the month; no registration is required and the more the merrier, so pass it along and let's enjoy the last (gasp!) days of summer. :)

This seems like a bad idea. They should make an event called Dinner in Gravy-Brown.

I think it's a cool idea. Here's the NY Times article about the one in Paris. Unfortunately, registration for the Chicago Diner en Blanc event is now closed. The event linked to above is apparently a take off on this.

There was one of these taking place in the park across from our hotel in Montreal last summer. Surprisingly, I didn't see any evidence that it was sponsored by Clorox and OxiClean. Talk about a missed opportunity.

    HI,

Any idea how much this cost?

    What to bring?
    - Table (no more than 30 x 30), chairs, white tablecloth
    - White garbage bag, though you take your garbage with you.
    - White attire
    - Your own tableware

    Food
Although we will be dining al fresco, please keep the elegant spirit of the event in mind. Whether you bring a splendid creation from home or pick-up from your favorite gourmet counter, plan to enjoy an appetizer, main course, dessert, and non-alcoholic beverage.

    Conduct Code
Only the most proper decorum will be tolerated. Guests are expected to show authorities that large groups are capable of incredible deference and respect toward the beauty of the space the event is held, and their fellow diners. In the true tradition of the “flash mob”, guests will sparkle and dazzle, while at the same time the space they occupy remains pristine and unspoiled by the event.

The event seems to be free and doesnt require registration. Also, they say to bring white picnic blankets, not tables and chairs. Theres a list of things to bring on the site.

There are two separate events - I know nothing about either except that a friend got tickets for the Aug 27th one I gather ...

1- the Dinner in White is apparently open to anyone who shows up and is - acc to the website - only publicized through word of mouth to friends? http://thedinnerinwhitechicago.vpweb.com/

2- Diner en Blanc is "sold out" but there was no charge - they are taking 1,000 people -first 250 to sign up plus one guest then 250 then filling out the 1,000 from a wait list. It was publicized to some degree which may be a point of contention between the two events?: http://dinerenblancchicago.com/

Anyone know more - this all looks rather confusing with new caveats that Diner is not associated with the Parisian Diner ... and no word on whether the newer Dinner is associate with Diner ...

Does this seem to anyone else to be an exercise in conformity or is it just me?

On the contrary, they're totally being anti-authoritarian nonconformists. They're just doing it with 1,000 of their closest friends, together, at the same time, in a way that's been done before

The one I saw in Montreal was a much more organized event: there were many long (50ish-foot) tables with white tablecloths & white chairs, fancy china place settings, and white tuxedo-clad waiters serving catered food. So I'd assume that was a pricey, ticketed event.
