I've already left Treasure Island and Dominick's empty-handed.

I've got 16 lbs of pickles to tackle and no proper salt.

    Suggestions?

I'm in the Near North neighborhood.

Check out the Morton's Product Locator at http://www.mortonsalt.com/store-locator/index.html

They list a variety of Dominick's (which I know you've just tried), some Jewels, and Strack & Van Til Market.

I'd just call a bunch of Dominicks stores and find one that has it. Many are supposed to. Just tell the customer service rep that it is in a green box.

Spice house has kosher with nothing but salt and Morton sent me to the same Dominick's & Strack & Van with no luck.

    Ugh!

When I was in Baltimore, I once bought canning salt at Walmart. Their website suggests they may or may not have any at North Ave., but definitely have it in Niles.

The website listed at least 10 Dominick's within 10 miles of 60640. Like I said, I'd start calling around. I go to the one at Western and Roscoe to buy mine.

That's not a Dominick's anymore, is it? I'm not sure Mariano's (Roundy's) is open yet, but the last time I drove by the Western/Roscoe location, it looked pretty well gutted.

Anyway, pairs4life, I'd try an old-time-y hardware store that carries canning supplies. I can never recall the name of the joint I frequent, but it's in Northfield, on the north side of Willow Rd, just east of the Edens. I've found all manner of things there, including that elusive Pickle Crisp mentioned elsewhere here, cookware of all kinds, sporting goods, plants, flowers, all sorts of oddball gardening equipment, Weber BBQ grills, and - yes! - not one, but TWO different types of wiggly worms, for fishermen and vermiculture enthusiasts alike. I bet they can tell you where to find pickling salt, too, on the off-chance that they don't carry it.

    Good luck!

Also try Menard's. They seem to have jumped on the canning bandwagon.

    Fill me in.

Canning salt means no caking agents or iodine right?

Wouldn't a kosher salt or a bag of Korean salt do the trick? I don't think either of those have any caking agents or iodine in them.

Meaning if the list of ingredients on the packing says "salt" and nothing else you are good to go?

The other difference is that pickling salt dissolves in cold water. This is a nice property for making brines for pickling and for bringing meat, since you don't have to first heat the water to dissolve the salt.

You are probably right. I haven't been there since last year. I tend to buy a few boxes of pickling salt at time because it's the only time I'm ever in Dominick's and I don't like making special trips. In any case, this stuff isn't that hard to find. Just call around.

Chicago's own Morton's Kosher salt has anti-caking agents. Diamond Kosher, I got it at the Spice House for $3.99 for a 3 or 4 lb box, doesn't.

Wal- Mart in Bridgeview didn't have it. Menard's on Clybourn was a bust.

Found a fantastic store in Bridgeview called Shop & Save. They had the pickling salt, $1.79 for a 4 lb, maybe 3 lb box so I got 2, and it's chock full to the brim with fetas, various dates, yogurts, hallal meats, Middle Eastern non-alcoholic Malt Beverages, organic fruits & vegetables, exotic conventional fruits, including litchis, guavas, and passion fruits, plums and necatrines in every color, Polish foods & pickles, olives, an aisle of olive oils,Mexican Pepsi, an array of kirsch & even an elderkirsch.

I bought a full fat non-homogenized yogurt today. I can't wait to go back and explore.

    Hi,

Does your Diamond Kosher salt clump? If not, it very likely has flowing agents added.

Cathy, it's the only Kosher I've run across that has only salt listed, nothing else. Pickles are bright, not the least bit cloudy, but I'm saving that now that I have the pickling salt for the next batches

I can confirm that Diamond Crystal kosher salt can, indeed, clump. It's our preferred kosher salt.

If I leave box of Diamond in the cooking rv it will clump--but in the house with little temp/humidity swings it isn't a problem

Morton Pickling/Canning Salt spotted in large supply at Fresh Farms on Touhy this morning. In fact, they had more pickling salt than kosher salt.

The Mariano's (Roundy's) at Western and Roscoe opened yesterday, and I can happily report that they are well stocked with Morton Canning & Pickling Salt for $1.29/4 lb.s
