We have a weekend house near here and I have to say it's the best restaurant in the area. I cringe that they painted and textured their obviously authentic 1950s knotty pine walls (I like the whole supper club thing up here), but it's a pretty comfortable restaurant for all that. We haven't had their pizza yet as we always seem to find some pasta dish that intrigues us. They have as a special farfalle with tomato cream sauce, sausage, and peppers that is to die for. My husband especially likes the lasagna, and when we were there 2 weeks ago on a Sunday evening, they had a special that was this lasagna and their beautiful house salad for $9. Their marinara is wonderfully flavorful (it came with capellini as a side with my eggplant parmigan, which was also very good), not just some plain tomato sauce as with some Italian restaurants. The first time we went there, in the summer, they had a special appetizer that was grilled asparagus with gorgonzola. Amazing! We brought my sister and her husband there one weekend and had the grilled calamari appetizer by which they judge all Italian restaurants. My sister wiped up the excess sauce with bread, it was so flavorful. Had a wonderful beef and lentil soup there last time.
It is pricey for this area, that's for sure, but the service is excellent, they've got some really interesting wine selections, and the woman who owns the place makes sure you're seated and happy. It seems a family business as our very attentive busboy was obviously a grandson and getting a lot of grief from some regulars who obviously knew the family who owns the place.
We're been next door to the Moose Creek Inn (formerly the Sugar Creek Inn) which has great log walls and some fabulous wallpaper, along with a fireplace, but I really didn't like their fish fry (they potato pancakes were really weird tasting). We went there for breakfast, and their pancakes were quite good. We also like Abell's Corners further down on 12. We haven't had anything bad there. The homemade chicken soup is to die for, as is the cheeseburger club which is the best burger I've had anywhere. The fried chicken is also very good. I wasn't too impressed with their breakfast, but they have the best homemade strawberry shortbread. Silk and meringue pies also are wonderful.
Did I mention we don't really cook much when we're out here?
