Wanted some solid BBQ to accompany Saturday night's Auburn-Clemson showdown (sibling rivalry with long-distance trash-texting in play) and was too lazy to make my own . . . so ordered up a large links and an extra large tips to go.

We had only just started eating the tips and Mrs. Kman and I started looking at each other and then commenting "Wow, these are REALLY good tonight". And again and again. Just really knocked it out of the park with that night's batch. Links were good as always, of course, but to the (valid) point made about the variability in any Q joint's product I just wanted to add a data point that Saturday night was a great example of when H1 is on, it's ON (apologies to SWA).

Oh, and AU won in OT so I have family bragging rights for one year. :)

My first visit to Honey 1 tonight. It was really good. I had a half slab, which comes with fries, with thw sauce on the side. The ribs were excellent and very meaty. The Red Stripe I bought at the place across the street washed it down nicely. I'll definitely be back.

One thing - I wish they would sell the fish by the piece, because I would have loved to try it.

Fish would be a nice addition, hopefully one of the Robert's are reading.

Their wings (sans sauce) are among my favorites. Try those in the meantime.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding . . . (fried) catfish and perch, as well as shrimp, are available. The earlier comment re: fish was only lamenting that it's only sold in "dinners" vs. by the piece.

    LTH,

Honey 1 for mid week lunch. Large tip/link combo and half rack of spare ribs vanished between two male adults. Noon plus thirty BBQ was fresh off the Aquarium smoker and absofuckinglutely glorious. It is refreshing not to have to use the phrase "liked in context" when talking commercial BBQ in Chicago.

Honey 1, count me a fan!

    Enjoy,

You were counted a long time ago (at least according to the wall in the entrance). I have never done H1 for lunch , but if you bothered to post using such superlative terms , it must have been especially good. I usually stop at Honey 1 to pick up dinner when I am returning home from a client in the area. It has been OK+ to pretty good (but never Uncle John's good). Maybe I should try stopping on the way to the client instead. I am headed that way tomorrow around that time. Does the same schedule apply on Saturday? Usually the owner of the business springs for lunch on weekends, maybe tomorrow I will surprise them with a slab or two. Beware of geeks bearing gifts.

Typical, though not always, weekly schedule is Friday and Sunday Robert Adams at Honey 1 cooks twice, so noon and 5:30pm are peak times. Saturday he cooks all through the day, so anytime.

Thanks Gary, that's useful info. I have probably been showing up a little early (or late). With barbecue, timing is everything.

I usually stop in there right after they open the doors. Lately it's been Sundays right at noon. It's ranged from 'Damn that's good' to 'Just leave me alone'.

I made my first visit to Honey 1 yesterday for lunch around 12:15. I ordered the mini tips & links lunch special, sauce on the side. Also split a pulled pork sandwich with a friend. The tips and links were unlike anything I've ever had. So freaking delicious. I'm certainly not as experienced as many people here since I haven't been to any of the South Side places, but this was some awesome eats. Tips were juicy, tender and smoky. Not a ton of bark on them, but enough to provide some contrast. The links packed a nice punch. I liked the sauce as well. The pulled pork on the other hand was a disaster. So dried out it wasn't even funny. Just bad.

Can't wait to get back and get some more tips and links.

Do they serve brisket everyday? I don't see it on the website and can't remember if it was on the menu last time I was there.

Stopped by Honey1 today for lunch, about 1:30. Split a mini tip/link combo, pulled pork sandwich, and brisket sandwich with a friend. All I can say is WOW. Every damn thing was great. The brisket and the tips were the standouts.
The brisket was tender, moist, and had great flavor. The tips had plenty of tasty meat and some nice bark. The pulled pork was good and so were the links, although they were almost a little dry, but a little sauce perked them right up to snuff. This has got to be one of the best BBQ meals I've had in a looong time. Honey1 is still hitting on all cylinders.

Fifille and I had tips and the brisket sandwich on Sunday. I particularly liked the hot links but have never had Uncle Johns or Lems so I need to expand my horizons.

We were thinking of doing BBQ for NYE, and this place is only about 10 minutes away from a party we're attending later on. How crazy do you think the place will be on NYE?

I was looking at the menu and saw that there are nearly no sides but slaw, fries, okra and bread. Is that really it? I was hoping for mac & cheese, corn, beans, etc.

    You forgot gizzards.

So, I thought I'd just throw this out there for you. Honey One is a more or less of what I'd call a CHICAGO STYLE bbq joint. You want tips and links, sauce on the side. Anything else that you get that is noteworthy is essentially a bonus. Spares might be ok, but tips and links are generally the stars of this style, (imo, of course.) They have a counter you order at, and a doorway that leads to a dine-in are with ten(ish) tables, a men's and women's bathroom (complete with sink, toilet, handsoap, paper towels, and a garbage can,) and a tv. They will bring your order out to you on a tray with a few napkins and a plastic fork or two. You will eat it, clean up, and then leave. It sounds like you might be thinking Honey One might be something more than a Chicago Style q joint. It is not. Well, actually it kind of is - they have tables and a tv.

    No I didn't.

I just assumed everybody had sides. That's okay, I'm not really sure what Mr. Pie had in mind, he just said "Ribs" and I saw that Honey 1 was nearby and neither of us have been there.

Looking at the One-Two Punch thread, we could start off at Fat Willy's, share sides and a half slab of ribs, and head over to Honey One for another half slab and have a rib-off. Assuming Willy's is open on NYE.

...which usually agrees with me as it's almost always sports in some form (NFL, NBA, MLB in that order and depending upon the time of year). Come to think of it though, I usually arrive when Robert Jr. is manning the counter. Add to that the BYOB perk, and I'm a happy camper. I have sat through an entire football game there (when there were several tables open), belching surreptitiously, with no nudges from the staff to push me out the door*.

After pitching this idea yesterday, he told me he didn't think he could eat that much. I shake my head in shame. So it's Fat Willy's on NYE, Honey 1 for me this summer after a trip to the farmer's market. That should offset being around all that produce.

My husband and I have been catching up reading about some of the GNRs of LTH and he was craving for bbq after reading about Smoque and Honey 1 this last week. Today he surprised me by saying he wanted to head over to Honey 1. We got an extra large order of the ribtip combo to go. We got it home and we both fell in love. The links are especially tasty and spicy. The underwhelming fries taste better when you dip it in the bbq sauce. All in all, we shall return sometime in the near future. We are dying to try the catfish. Everyone has discussed the ribs, links and chicken so much, has anyone got any opinions on any of the fish?
