In the Hot Doug's thread it was mentioned that Sat was National Corn Dog day. Since my wife and I were already throwing an NCAA party, I decided
    to make my own Corndogs.

I never truly deep fried anything at home, so I borrowed a friends small imitation Fry Daddy.
I bought the wonderful dogs with thick snappy skin and a light smokey flavor from Kurowski's polish deli on Milwaukee north of Diversy.

The batter was cornmeal, flour, baking powder, baking soda, chili powder, pureed creamed corn, lowfat buttermilk, lowfat milk, and egg.

The fryer was a piece of crap with no temp control and it did not get quite hot enough to produce a really crispy outside.
Other than that, they were truly wonderful.

Oh, and I also fried some poppers, made with canned pickled jalapenos stuffed with a mixutre of mozzarella and goat cheese.

Next time I might have to use Thuringers instead of dogs.

Sounds like great fun. I've never made corn dogs at home.

Another thing you might want to do next time is skip the fry daddy. Just pick up a big lodge cast iron dutch oven. It'll be a good friend to you for years and years to come. It can deep fry, braise, bake, whatever. And they're super cheap.

    Best,
    Michael / EC

Actually we just bought a 7 quart lodge cast-iron dutch oven for $33 and free shipping on ebay. We've named it Ralph, because Big Bertha and Black Betty seemed too obvious.

The reason I didn't use it for frying over 30 corn dogs was because I did the frying on the back deck to avoid making the whole house smell of grease for weeks especially since my yet to be remodelled kitchen has no venting system.
The electric unit in the Fry Daddy made it very easy for outside use.

The ideal would be an stand alone electric heating element that you could stick in any pot, such as a dutch oven. I know many fryers have elements that lower right into the oil and some people prefer it because it heats the oil directly instead of having to heat to pot. However, I'm not aware of an element by itself you can use in any pot.
