On Saturday I am going to have a horde of hungry little hockey players on my hands near Randall Road and Higgins. Are there any pancake houses near there that could handle a large group on short notice for a late breakfast (11ish)? Not interested in Denny's.

    Thanks in advance.

Burnt Toast is literally just a bit south of Higgins/Randall. Pretty good grub, should do the trick.

In downtown Dundee (right off of Higgins), there is Benedict's. It's in an old house, cute place, note sure it would be able to accommodate a huge group on short notice. Great food, though.

In Dundee on Route 72 is The Manor, old time breakfast/pancake house. It's on the hill as you go east out of town.

The Manor is long gone. We met my sister at Burnt Toast on Randall in Elgin just north of the I-94 interchange this morning. There is a second location in Alonquin on Randall that just moved into a larger location. When we meet my sister we usually go to Alexander's on Rte 31 and I-94 but thought we would try Burnt Toast. We loved it!!! Great friendly service is a great start. Interesting menu, my vegetarian partner saw many many things that looked interesting and decided on Seafood Benedict which was 2 nicely perfect english muffins topped with a scallop/shrimp mixture and a nice egg and sauce. My sister had a nice looking French toast with strawberries..... the strawberries are not fresh but in a compote as the server described. I had potato pancakes which I see in too few places and got six small thin perfect pancakes... they could have used a hint of onion and been a little crisper but where still very good with a side of OK sausage patties. The servers were always there but not obnoxious and very very friendly and attentitive. The coffee was good and refilled smoothly. We went at 8 am but I could see where this place would have lines and waits in no time. There are very few good breakfast places in this area and we decided that from now on, this is where we will meet when we have breakfast together which is maybe 3 timesw a year.

As the OP, I can report that we had a pretty good breakfast at the Manor a couple of months ago--it is not long gone. Not a place to go out of the way for, but my omelet was made with fresh ingredients, if a bit overcooked. The food was rather slow in arriving, but the service was competent.

The funny thing is that when I started this thread two years ago, my kid's hockey team lost a big game, and we weren't in the mood for breakfast afterward. This year at a West Dundee tournament, we had a better result, so I finally got to the Manor in East Dundee.

Sorry for the confusion, I was referring to the Manor Pancake House which moved from St Charles to a location that they built in South Elgin on Randall Road near the McDonalds. They were only there about a year before they closed. They had been a long time institution in downtown St Charles next to the Fox River when the City forced them out to build a Riverwalk (which is still not built) They never had the same following when they moved to South Elgin.

I didn't realize there were two Manors. I'll have to try Benedict's Eggs and More the next time I'm in the area.

The Manor in E. Dundee is OK.. but not spectacular. I like Burnt Toast. Very good, if a little pricey. Another good place is the Big Skillet. It's on McClean Blvd, just North of Big Timber Road. Very good pancakes.

By far, the best breakfast in the Elgin/Dundee area is Benedicts! It is small, but they do they best to accomodate large groups. Best to call in advance, I would think. I moved to Elgin 15 yrs ago from Lincoln Square and really think Benedicts would more than hold its own against city breakfast spots. They have probably 8 - 10 different forms of benedict, including a crabcake version, a Milwaukee version with bratwurst, etc. The pumpkin pancakes are available seasonally and are killer. They have a terrific tart cherry stuffed french toast. My sister is a big fan of the corned beef hash and the crepes. The "skilletless" skillets are great - the breakfast potatoes aren't greasy at all. I often get the veggie skillet with feta. My only complaint, and it's ironic that they specialize in benedicts, is that the hollandaise isn't nearly lemony enough for me, but that it is easily remedied with a squeeze or 2 of lemon.

Based on one of the previous posts, I tried Benedict's for the first time today.

There were people waiting outside, so I went inside to give my name. I was told it would be about 15 minutes to get a table for 2. We were seated in about 5 minutes. :D

My daughter had French Toast. It was 3 very large slices from French bread. I sneaked a taste, and it was very good. She also had the fresh squeezed OJ, which was also very good. Sometimes kids are not too big on the fresh squeezed stuff due to the pulp. Since this was a kid's size, perhaps they strain it.

I had an Omelet with Ham, Cheese and Onion, with a side of Turkey Sausage. I asked if the Omelets were "Fluffy", and the server said yes. It was very good, but not Puffy/Fluffy like the ones are Walker's Pancake House, and some of the other local breakfast spots. The Turkey Sausage was excellent. I also got a fruit cup, which I gave to my daughter. She said it was very good.

Perhaps the best part of breakfast was the Coffee. They serve Intelligentsia. This is among the very best coffee I have ever had ANYWHERE! I think it's their own special blend. I purchased a package to make at home.. I have a good drip pot with a burr grinder. It will be interesting to see if this will approach the taste from the restaurant.

The menu has several variations on Eggs Benedict, and several Southwest inspired options including Chilaquiles, Huevos Rancheros, and the obligatory breakfast burrito.

    I will definitely be back.

We've been in the area about 12 years, so have hit up all the mentioned places- except Manor, which we drive by constantly but have never gone in. It actually is on my list to try next for breakfast. Benedicts is quite good, but not a place to take a kid ball team or birthday party...We like Burnt Toast but it is a bit pricey. There is always the original Reeses on 31 in town in Algonquin, south of Algonquin Rd. There is also Georgias, which is where the Ihop on Randall used to be, just north of County Line. Its good too, in a general, American food kind of place. Like a cross between Ihop and Burnt Toast.
